ROY AYERS recovering in New York after hospitalization Sunday https://exclaim.ca/music/...n_portland
Turns out this one was somewhat misreported the other day. Sources had stated that Roy was taken to the hospital AFTER touching down in Portland where he and his band were to open for Bobby Caldwell (ain't that a shame... this dude's far better than Bo... I digress)..
"To all of my fans and supporters it is with my deepest sorrow that I was not able to come to Portland to perform for you this evening. I took a wrong turn and wound up at the hospital, ha ha I'm always one that can laugh at themselves," Ayers wrote. "I'm still a little out of sorts, but with the help and care that my family provides me I should be back to my 78 years young self sooner than later and back on the road. I thank you all for your continued support and hope to see you next time around."
I'm glad the dude is seeming okay. Aged or not, it was a treat to see him in February performing at a small club in Los Angeles. Sold out 2 or 3 nights performing an early show and a late show (11pm). Although there was no background vocal female vocalist (as par the course on most of his seminal works)... the band he had was incredibly tight... Sending love dude's way.

Man... this time three years ago I lost Prince and my brother. I was listening to Roy Ayers a lot to bring my spirits up, so even this hospitalization scare is weirding me out. He just joined Instagram in the last year.

About twenty years ago, I was at work listening the radio and just switched the channel to soul oldies KACE (Los Angeles) and they were playing some Roy Ayers. Then, when the song ended, to my somewhat mild concern, they segued RIGHT INTO another Roy Ayers song without any DJ banter or commercial break in between, then goddamnit they did the SAME with a THIRD Roy Ayers song after that which I found alarming. Jesus, when that third song started I was fucking SURE he had died and I had just missed the announcement. I was NOT ready to lose Roy Ayers in 1999 (nor am I ready to in 2019.)
Turns out it was his birthday or something. What a relief!

Not even including the namesake, I sometimes get spooked or sudden chills if I hear an individual artist's song played on the radio at an unusual time or a track that's not the most popular one. I wait until the DJ chimes in to make sure everything is A-OK. Jeux Sans Frontiers
