Was gonna see Lenny Kravitz in concert until I found he LIP-SYNCS So I was really digging the song Low from his last album and thought I'd check out some live performances on YouTube. First one I watched was on Ellen, which was lip-synched, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt, as a lot of artists lip-synch on TV shows, but then I saw footage from his recent live shows, and he was lip-syncing it in concerts too.
I expected more from an artist like Lenny. It's not as if he even has an excuse of being a dancer/elaborate stage showman ala MJ, Beyonce etc. There really is no excuse for Lenny Kravitz to be faking it at a concert, and it's totally put me off ever going to see him. [Edited 4/29/19 10:12am]

I'm shocked to hear this. I've seen Lenny perform many times in concert and I've always had very good seats too and I've never suspected lip-syncing. Lenny has a good voice and doesn't have to resort to this, so I hope you are wrong or perhaps there is a reason for him doing it on the footage you saw. I'm a big fan, so I hope he hasn't stooped this low or I won't be paying good money to go see him again.

I saw three different shows uploaded onto Youtube by fans, and he was lip-synching the song Low in all three. I didn't check out the rest of his set, but he was 100% lip-synching Low in those three shows. [Edited 4/29/19 10:13am]

I seen him in concert twice. He didn't lip sync during either show.

Maybe he was inspired by Michael. "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

A lot, and I mean a lot, of artists these days use a mixture of playback and live vocals. That video posted there looks fairly standard, to me it looks like he's singing a live lead vocal with canned backing vocals. I'm not fan of it myself, i'd rather it all be live and it sound slightly worse over it sounding perfect, but that's just me.

My Wife and I saw Lenny on his current Tour in Atlanta recently. He definitely wasn't lip-syncing. But, he was using lots of pre-recorded backing vocals. I never have been a fan of that type of thing. Perhaps he was trying to save money on his tour budget, rather than pay for singers.
Slightly off-topic, but we also saw Yanni recently, and even he was using some pre-recorded backing tracks for the music.
It seems in todays industry, in an effort to save money, shortcuts are now being taken on tour.

Yes. I am. Where is he lip-synching?? The entire lead vocal is lip-synched. If you can’t hear that, you either don’t know the song well or are really bad at spotting when an artist is using playback.

How can you necessarily tell if someone is lip syncing unless they are using a very old recording and their current voice has changed dramatically since then due to age, smoking etc. To me it sounds like he is singing live, but there are pre recorded backing vocals since I don’t see any backing vocals singers in that video.

[Edited 4/30/19 17:03pm] I get it you just saw him in concert and don't want to admit to yourself that he lip-synced. But it don't take a rocket scientist to tell if someone is using playback. If the lead vocal is completely indistinguishable from the original, without the tiniest nuance of difference, then that almost always means someone is faking it. I like Lenny as an artist, but will call someone out if I think they're cheating their audience. Don't shoot the messenger just because you're too in denial to face the truth. I've got some more sobering news for you, Billie Jean on Motown 25 was playback and Santa Claus isn't real. [Edited 4/30/19 23:30pm]

I don’t think Lenny’s voice has changed. I don’t think it’s as easy to tell as you say.

I don’t think Lenny’s voice has changed. I don’t think it’s as easy to tell as you say. It is virtually impossible, even for a singer in their prime, to recreate a studio quality vocal in a live setting where it sounds EXACTLY the same. And then if you watch multiple videos where the vocals are identical, no little changes in intonation or pitch, it’s a telltale sign of lip-syncing.

Looking through the videos on youtube and it seems a lot of people are saying these songs are playback. LOL always knew Lenny was phony rubbish

I'm fairly certain it's just Low that he Lipsyncs to. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

He probably just doesn't feel comfortable singing that particular song live. Which isn't unusual. A lot of artists lipsync parts of their concerts. Michael Jackson was notorious for it.

Why would I "don't want to admit to yourself that he lip-synced." and "you're too in denial to face the truth."?? It's not that my life's happiness is hinging on whether something is live or not. I couldn't care less of what you think is sung live or not (it's just ironic coming fom an MJ fan), as it's just that, your aussumption. So far it's you in denial, denying yourself out of a great concert that I and thousands of others enjoyed.

Certainly no crime in that. It is a strange choice given he could choose not to include this song on the setlist. Good song but hardly essential.

His new record is great and his back catalogue speaks for itself, imo. Just was genuinely shocked/disappointed to see him lip-syncing in a concert. Saw a recent setlist and the show looks pretty cool, so I'm still tempted to go see him.

I'll go see Lenny when he makes his way back to Toronto. I've seen him 6-7 times and he always puts on a great show, but I will be watching for any lip -syncing, and if I see it, I won't go see him again. His latest cd is excellent and I agree that his back catalogue speaks for itself. He's written some really great songs over the years. I love the Johnny Cash song on his latest and the story about that is very moving.
