Dick Dale caught the big wave
Nearly 60 years ago, surfers flocked to the waves along Newport Beach to try mastering the new craze. When the sun set, they needed someplace to dance and Dick Dale delivered it at Rendezvous Ballroom on the Balboa Peninsula. Nearly every week for two years, Dale and his band packed over 3,000 people into the ballroom. “The energy between the Del-Tones and all those surfers stomping on the hardwood floor in their sandals was extremely intense. The tone of Dale’s guitar was bigger than any I had ever heard,” recalled Del-Tones bandmate Paul Johnson.

RIP I admired his signature style. I had no idea he had such demanding health issues for most of his life. if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

There is a connection between Dick Dale and Prince. When "The Artist" did his first aftershow in Paradiso, Amsterdam in 1995, there was already a concert by Dick Dale going on. The visitors didn't like it that they were pushed out to make room for us. They gathered around at the other end of the street while the line of Prince fans was growing. They did some shouting, but nothing bad happened. [Edited 3/19/19 8:32am]

I bet Prince listened to the Del-Tones. They have always been a cult favorite passed around in music circles. "if you can't clap on the one, then don't clap at all"

Teri Gross (NPR) recently shared a more distant interview with him. Quite interesting discussion about his guitar strings. I personally love surf music...Wipeout!
