He could have done both. Phil Collins had really successful solo albums and still continued to participate in Genesis. Phil was also in the band Brand X. Phil did songs on soundtracks and duets (Separate Lives, Easy Lover). Phil played drums on other acts records (Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, Howard Jones, Philip Bailey). Mike Rutherford from Genesis did Mike + The Mechanics. Tony Banks released solo albums too, but his were not really commercially successful. Lionel Richie has said that he did not want to leave the Commodores, just do solo albums on the side.

The Motown 60 special is on now on CBS. Stevie just performed Sir Duke. Now Smokey Robinson is talking and Berry Gordy is sitting behind him. I guess Cedric The Entertainer is doing the Richard Pryor part from Motown 25.

Well sure she was since she was sleeping with the boss & the vice-president. She took the Dorothy part from Stephanie Mills, who was supposed to do The Wiz movie. Stephanie was around the right age, Miss Ross wasn't. Plus Stephanie originated the part on Broadway.

Yes ! Diana was the reason that movie flopped. I can't even imagine MJ & Stephanie Mills on one song. They would have hit that right out of the ballpark! Plus they were friends also.

I'm not sure that was the reason. It was an expenisve disco movie musical. I read that at the time The Wiz was one of the most expensive movies ever made in Hollywood period. I don't think Zanadu, Thank God It's Friday, Sgt. Pepper, Can't Stop The Music, or that movie with Earth Wind & Fire did well either. And Sgt. Pepper had the Bee Gees & Peter Frampton who were huge sellers at the time. I think Rocky Horror Picture Show was a flop too, but became a cult hit in the 1980s with the goth crowd. They resurrected it. I think musicals were just out of style by that point with the general movie public. The exception was Grease, but that wasn't really disco related though. It fit in with the popularity of the retro Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Sha Na Na, & Blues Brothers. I don't know if the Tommy movie was a hit or not. With The Wiz, I think the only person from the play was Ted Ross the lion. I've heard the Broadway album, and I do like Nipsey Russell better than the stage play singer.

i remember the scandalous gossip about it back then and Diana was a COMPLETE laughing stalk of the industry insisitng on this role as Dorothy. But I was right there at the screening of 'The Wiz' and was COMPLETELY mesmerized by this motion picture. The music orchestrated by Quincy Jones was AMAZING! MJ was INCREDIBLE!

It was good. Especially Ne-yo's performance as the Tin man. But something was off about it. It didn't have that magic.
