'76, '78, '82-'85, '87 and '94 are far better. 1991 was a great year though.

without checking all released album lists in detail, my guess it that any year from mid 70s to late 80s could qualify [Edited 3/22/19 5:40am] Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

You got music on an indie/underground/"bubbling under"/non-pop level and of course, music on the widespread mainstream stage. You got your years that are blossomed on the indie level (1981 comes to mind), years that were strong on the mainstream side (1985) and years that were just great all across the board high and low (i.e. 1984). Context also matters as well. For years that were better mostly outside the Top 40, did the sounds of that year go on to influence music in future years? '81 is generally seen as a weak year for mainstream music but the black and dance charts were booming and what was banging in the clubs that year went on to mold music on a mainstream level throughout the rest of the 80's.

1981 is one of the best ever years for British pop music.

I suppose it depends on what kind of music you like. I'd personally say that 1984 was the best year for music.

I wonder why people on this site always say music made 1970s or after is the best. Why not 1908, 1924, 1957, 1968, etc.? Or even pre-recording industry? How can you claim that the best music is the one you heard all the time? You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Choosing the best year is not easy as it's all relative, however, I strongly believe the best decade for music was the 1970's. So much great music from this time and music that still sounds great today. You sure won't be able to say that 50 years from now about today's music.

1991 was a great year for music. It delivered two albums that would end up having a profound effect on my life: Phyllis Hyman "Prime Of My Life" and Mariah's "Emotions". Definately not the best year in music for me. But, it ranks somewhere up there. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

ah, the year of "little fluffy clouds", "innuendo" and "ring ring ring (ha ha hey)", "losing my religion", and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Are you kidding me? 1991 is the year Letoya Jackson released the album No Relations. When I listened to it for the first time I knew it would be legendary right away. Epic. Sexbox remains a pop hit and Let's Rock The House is pure Beat-it style rock (notice how it even has "rock" in the name). Wild Side was a #1 hit in the Phillipines.

LOL, i've never even heard this Letoya Jackson song and wiki says the album was only released in Colombia, Germany and Holland. But hey, I approve of musical delusions, we all have them.

Oh, look, a Janet fan! You are SO easy to spot with your pointless resentment of Letoya it's actually funny. There's a reason Toy has been named "The Pope Of Pop" and it isn't because you're all smart and we're fools. She has a very loyal, dedicated fanbase The Toy Soldiers who gather at The Church Of Letoya, and she has been popping them hits since the 70's regardless of whatever is going on on her personal life, regardless of that devilish Jack Gordon and her heartbreaking keloids. It shouldn't come as a surprise that she is a big star in the Phillipines and East Timor. If you've been to those places you know what I'm talking about. I mean, I've never been there but I know someone who has and he tells me: Letoya's BIG!
