Weezer may have written a song about Prince on their latest albim I've been a fan of Weezer a little while.
The guys have dropped a new album today, fittingly titled The Black Album.
In short, anyone think they're referring to a frind of ours?

There is no way this song is not about Prince

Agreed but why "The Prince who wanted everything"?
A reference to the control he wanted over the work which was being barred by his label?
I'd hate to think there's more to the title than a lust for stardom and fame. Sure, Prince enjoyed those things but, as time went on, he became more driven about his creativity and control of his output rather than just chasing a number one.

Love this homage. Heard it this morning. Been a big Weezer fan for 20+ years as well. I think this is in reference to all the so called "friends" who turned their back on him over the years. Kind of nod to Old Friends 4 Sale..IMHO. As my wife said, the best part is they didn't try to incorporate the infamous MPLS sound. It's still Weezer. Rivers Cuomo is so under appreciated.

I used to really dig Weezer, idk why but I don’t dig any of their newer stuff. The covers record to me was so uninspired. I wonder if Rivers generated this song vis spreadsheet or wrote it specifically... but not that much, really. Haven’t heard the new album of originals and those lyrics don’t make me wanna run out and hear that song. The last album of originals was Ratidue or whatever and it was pretty much unlistenable. . https://www.culturecreatu...ers-cuomo/ if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

Wow. Kind of sad.

Yes!
I really like this aspect of it the most because Weezer are truly making the song their own by just being themselves. In fact, when it opened, it sounded very Beach Boys - but it makes sense because they're a major influence for Weezer.
The fact that the lyrics so clearly convey that this is their tribute to Prince really negates the need for them to include a funky bass line, 80s synth or a ripping guitar solo. It's just Weezer and they just love Prince. What more needs to be said? [Edited 3/1/19 23:56pm]

I think they lost their edge a while ago. Now they are on tour with the Pixies. Nostalgia sells.

On the track “The Prince Who Wanted Everything,” you have phrases like “funk-rock riffs” and “paisley bones.” Is that song about Prince? Cause tomorrow is taking too long
and yesterday's too far away and the reality that you believe in begins to bind.

I think they lost their edge a while ago. Now they are on tour with the Pixies. Nostalgia sells. [/quote]I saw them a few years ago on a co-headlining tour with Panic! At The Disco and they were fantastic. It was a much better show than the second time I saw Prince during the Welcome 2 Chicago gig. Weezer never really had an edge. Rivers has always been slightly goofy, quirky lyrics yet clean riffs and catchy hooks. I don't think they ever set out to be a killer rock band. They are perfectly comfortable in their lane of nostalgia and pop culture references. That started with Buddy Holly and has never changed. I don't love everything they put out, nor are they my favorite rock band, (That would be Brand New) but they are a great band to play loud with the sunroof open.

So who is Weezer, and what is the song actually saying about Prince, that he wanted everything, and in the end, look where he ended up, and that the things he put importance on really didn't matter? At least that's what I take from it......anyone?

Weezer is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1992. The band currently consists of Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, lead guitar, keyboards), Patrick Wilson (drums), Brian Bell (guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), and Scott Shriner (bass, backing vocals). After signing to Geffen Records in 1993, Weezer released their debut self-titled album, also known as the "Blue Album", in 1994. Backed by successful music videos for the singles "Buddy Holly", "Undone – The Sweater Song" and "Say It Ain't So", the Blue Album became a 4x platinum success. Their second album, Pinkerton (1996), featuring a darker, more abrasive sound, was a commercial failure and initially received mixed reviews, but went on to achieve cult status and critical acclaim years later. Both the Blue Album and Pinkerton are now frequently cited among the best albums of the 1990s. Following the tour for Pinkerton, bassist Matt Sharp left the band and Weezer went on hiatus.

Considering they named their album the same name as the most infamous Prince album of all time, I'd be more surprised if there wasn't a song about Prince on it.

Weezer have named several records after different colors, so I don't think the name is particularly Prince influenced. A certain kind of mellow.
