. Janelle was funky af, sure she does the same moves but it was nice to hear her actually singing too. I liked the funked out ending, kinda wish I had that version on MP3. if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

Janelle was robbed for the album of the year award imo but I already knew the Grammys commission is lame so I'm not surprised at all the performance was nice.

Even though I prefer Janelle(whom I FINALLY met at a ULTRA private screening) as an actress. I felt she was TOTALLY robbed also. Plus she didn't really look to happy about it either. She has worked particularly hard promoting this latest album/project that has been bittersweet after the SHOCKING transitioning of Prince(r.i.p.).
It's COMPLETELY laughable to me that Cardi B has a Grammy before Diana Ross & Janelle. "That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

I have a shocking admission: When they annouced Cardi B as the winner of her grammy I shouted,"They gave this b***h a grammy?" I'm ashamed my inner-voice came out.

Oh well. | |

The grammy's are very skittish. Their view is that young people aren't familiar enough with Motown and we don't want them to fall asleep, so lets get JLO. She'll show a lot of leg and jiggle for the cameras. Plus she'll dance up a storm. That'll keep people from changing the channel. In that respect it worked. I always remember when Frank Ocean performed. They tried to get him to do a less technical-heavy, arty performance of a slow, deep cut from the album. He insisted and flopped. Now we have Ariana Grande fighting for artistc integrity when everyone pretty much knows she needs all the professional guidance she can get when it comes to performance. These people have been doing this for decades. They know what's good for TELEVISION!

It is laughable. Cardi B is pure trash and she's being pushed by the industry like the second coming of Lauryn Hill. The country girl was a very safe choice as a winner, I predicted she would have won anyway because she makes the kind of music Grammys like to reward. Also Jennifer Lopez for a Motown tribute? I was like, seriously?

Well i try to stay away from the Grammys as it is not much going on to really care about, they are limited with their choices they dont dig deep, the award itself is secondary to the laundry list of performances trouded out. I believe there are about 100+ categories and about a dozen given out on the show if even that many. So I cant really comment though I will say that people sleep on Kaey Musgraves and she is the real deal, and has gotten respect from a lot of legendary artitsts one being Elton John who was talking about her before she had an album.Janelle is great but robbed I dont agree. There were alot of misses this year, Ariana Grande for Pop album for "Sweetner" that album was very weak to say the least and the new one is not much better. Cabello should have won that easily, but Ariana is the new Beyonce who gets nominated for anything she puts out. Chris Cornell getting a nod now is kind of a "thanks" after the fact, but in looking in his category, what the hell has happened to ROCK?? It was possibly the worst nominated field I ever have seen, not taking away from Cornell because its a great track, but the others in that category were very weak, the grammys need to hire some ROCK people quick. Cardi B is terrible and thats a reflection of the public not her, sorry but dont buy it or stream it and you wont see it. I agree when I saw Musgrave's performance I knew she would win. When she won I knew there'd be backlash. I also knew that it was a classic grammy choice.

Then let there be backlash, I mean I am happy talented artists at least are somewhat back, but Monae shouldnt be surprised either, I mean she is that "critics choice" though Musgraves got a lot of strong reviews too, Monae is like RadioHead, to some Radiohead was the most creative and to some, they were good than got too big for their own good (in their own head). To put records against each other they are so different I mean you are going to get that. Not one ROCK award given on the show, why bother have the category or show up? "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I was also happy that old pros like Ricky Martin can energize the stage just with their presence! Or that Alicia Keys can do the same by letting her do what she does best, sit at the piano(s) and sing.

The rock nominations are laughable more than ever- don't get me started on that.

Greta Van Fleet was nominated for best new artist... otherwise I guess Marron 5 was the closest thing we got to rock, but they are more like soft pop to me. VOTE....EARLY

Prince immitation? Prince worked on her album. Are you sure you're not actually hearing Prince? I did hear he actually worked on the album but there's something cheap about this chick . She suffers from the same thing as Gaga, which is that she always comes across as forced in her performances. Seems unnatural and almost desperate. Give me Kelis, over her any day!!

You can tell Janelle worked with Prince, he had a very heavy influence on her.

I saw clips of Lopez and her so-called Motown tribute. Very embarrassing. They had people like Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Chaka Khan, Lalah Hathaway and Valerie Simpson right there in the audience and the producers thought Lopez was an appropriate choice for a Motown tribute??? I wouldn't be surprised if Cardi B was originally approached for the tribute and they asked Lopez after Cardi B turned them down. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! Just saw the first part of the Janelle Monae performance (I want to see the other two songs)... I like listening to her albums, but whenever I see her live perfomances... it feels like a hardcore Prince obsessed Aunt had too much coffee.

Ha ha, no... it's like an imitator dancer troupe playing to a recording. I think she should go more her own scifi vibe live... Everything is a little bit less energetic, natural, and nuanced than real Prince live stuff. Better to move away from a shinng beacon like that standard and do your own thing. But of course, young folks aren't familiar with Prince and probably think all these little imitiations and tribute details are original. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

That is what I felt her performance was amazing
Between Janelle’s whole per4mance, H.E.R. shredding in purple, St. Vincent playing guitar in a Vanity-esque look & Cardi’s sexy purple set w the Christopher Tracey hair...there is no need to lament the state of music in 2019. The women are killing & Prince is still inspiring all. Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

I didn't watch but having J Lo perform the Motown tribute was flat out disrespectful. They wouldn't have gotten someone like her to do a British Invasion tribute and rightfully so, so why slight the recognition of Motown like that?
Also, I consider myself a Bino fan and while "This is America" was big, I don't think it was deserving of Song of the Year. Granted, I don't know the other noms but that song in particular blew up because of the video which without, it just doesn't work because the visuals are much stronger than the lyrics. Listening to the song, while it may mention "black man" here and have a line about police brutality there, it doesn't stand out much from the average trap song. Honestly, TIA winning SotY and Musgraves winning AotY feels more like a forced decision on the part of the Grammy committee. They've been getting rammed for not being more inclusive (which they deserved) as well as Neil Portnow's comment about female acts; to me, these wins feel like an action taken just to quiet the criticism rather than to actually reward truly deserving minority/female artists. Someone could have said the same for Prince at his time tho, that he looked like a Little Richard/ James Brown/Jimi Hendrix impersonation. There's more to Janelle's art than just that, exactly like there was more for Prince.

I agree about the sci fi vibe. The sci fi element is so important in her music and videoclips but not so much in her live shows and I don't get why. Anyway, she still is one of the best perfomers out there. Her performance was entertaining, I couldn't say the same for a lot of the stuff on that stage. [Edited 2/13/19 4:21am]
