Marvin Gaye’s Lost 1972 Album “You’re The Man” On the Way!

Today, Motown has announced further Marvin Gaye rarities on the way. On March 29, just a few days shy of what would have been Marvin’s 80th birthday, the label will released You’re The Man. The lost album recorded in 1972 and was slated to be the follow-up to his masterpiece, What’s Going On.

Following that landmark release, Gaye returned with the song “You’re The Man,” written about presidential candidate George McGovern. When that track failed to reach mainstream audiences, Gaye went back to the studio and recorded an album’s worth of material, producing himself and writing with the likes of Willie Hutch; Hal Davis; Pam Sawyer and Gloria Jones; and Freddie Perren and Fonce Mizell. Apart rom the “You’re The Man” single, non of that material was released at the time.

Now, the new, 17-track collection is set to bring together all of the soul legend’s solo and non-soundtrack work from ’72, 15 tracks of which are making their vinyl debut. In addition to the material recorded for the proposed album, You’re The Man will also include a rare, long version of Marvin Gaye’s cancelled 1972 Christmas single called “I Want To Come Home For Christmas,” and an unreleased mix of its instrumental B-side, “Christmas in the City.” Also among the tracks are three new mixes by acclaimed writer and producer Salaam Remi (or SaLaAM ReMi), who has worked with Amy Winehouse, The Fugees, and Nas. Remi has remixed “Symphony,” “I’d Give My Life For You,” and “My LAst Chance,” the latter of which is available now on digital and streaming services and will be included with pre-orders of the album. In addition to the music, the 2-LP edition of You’re The Man will include new liner notes by Marvin Gaye biographer David Ritz.

So get ready to enjoy some lost Marvin Gaye! Scroll down to check out the full track listing and place your pre-orders with the links below!

Why Viny and Digital only? Odd to not issue it on CD, Digtial is dumb, Marvin collectors dont want a MP3 or digital file they are looking more for physical releases, Vinyl is good but dont understand the digital as the other choice

Mathieu Bitton designed the brand new artwork for the forthcoming 'You're The Man' release: "I tried to think of what the Motown art department would have done back in 1972 for the gatefold 2-LP set. I did about 8 different covers and as always, the very first comp was it."

They're scraping the bottom of the barrel looking for quality material. All of the songs from You're The Man sessions have already been released in one form or another.

Makes me feel I must belong to a different era - the way people still seeking out vinyl releases in the era of CDs once felt, in fact! grandpa

yeah,I kinda wish that they had released this project years ago (as a complete album),instead of putting the tracks on various Deluxe Editions and box sets.I still intend to buy it,though.

Ok so i just read Jan Gaye's book and whoa. I must say I had no idea the man had these kinds of demons scratching at him. I knew he was troubled but this was something else. It cused me to dive back into his catalog like never before and rediscovering his genius on Here My Dear and In Our Lifetime. These records are just grand to me. In fact, I can’t seem to get enough of Marvin right now. His 70’s stuff is just blowing me away. The lush arrangements and soaring vocals this man was genius.

Man I was excited before I read the contents. It's really dishonest. I have all the tracks other than the remixes. If you don't already have this material definitely get it. It's also coming on cd now
