This project was completed before the 'Epiphany' CD was released in 1996, and for some reason, Warner Brothers decided to disregard all of the hard work that Chaka (& others!!) put into the project by cancelling it's release. Warners then started to release several of the tracks on various soundtracks, and others appeared as the 'new songs' on 1996's 'Epiphany'. From what I've heard on the tracks that I've collected from this project, Chaka Khan had a great CD that was dumped in favor of a 'Best Of' CD.

Chaka Khan 'Dare You To Love Me' (1995)

1. Dare You To Love Me
2. Never Miss The Water
3. Don't Take Back (Your Love)
4. Love Me Still
5. Pain
6. Miles Blowin'
7. Everywhere
8. Let My Heart Go
9. You & I Are One
10. Power
11. Whatever I Want
12. A Dream I Had
13. Every Little Thing
14. Something Deep
15. Your Love Is All I Know
16. It Ain't Easy Loving Me
17. Superlife - BONUS TRACK
18. Raspberry - BONUS TRACK

"Superlife" and "Raspberry" were never intended for the original release. Those two tracks were tacked on to a bootleg that circulated many years ago. The rest of the track listing is unofficial. I've heard several tracks that I was told were supposed to appear on the album but are not a part of the tracks listed above. I have a "Dare" CD that pretty much contains the songs that are listed plus a couple two or three additional tracks. I'll have to dig around to see if I can find it. No one (other than Warner Brothers) is 100% sure about the actual tracklisting.

Thanks for the info.

Chaka has said that she’s really proud of this album and hopes to still release it someday (independently,of course) but I don’t think that’s likely to happen.

Really, the only hope I had of seeing the unreleased tracks was if FTG made a comeback, were able to license WB titles and include them as bonus tracks on a reissue of "The Woman I Am". Are you familiar with all of the vault material FTG included on the Gladys Knight and the Pips reissues of "Life" and "Visions"? Those were amazing! Enough unreleased tracks for a full length album.

Good stuff. Who were the writers, producers, players? Why was it shelved?

“Love Me Still” is one of my favorite Chaka tunes. Sublime harmonies. David Gamson knows how to make some timeless music.

modified, CK's WB contract was up. The label didn't hear any hits and were telling her to sound like Mary J. Blige. Prince convinced her to go independent. And that was that.

Not sure who all of the producers were but she did team up with David Gamson again on several of the tracks. David was responsible for many of the songs on TWIA.

Although, IMO, the album wasn't nearly as strong as "The Woman i Am", "Dare" was still a damn good album. "Love You All My Lifetime" was one of the best singles of her career but I didn't quite hear anything of that same caliber on "Dare". R&B was undergoing drastic changes in the mid-90's and a lot of the veteran artists simply got pushed aside or dropped by the labels.

TWIA sold well enough for WB to keep her on their roster and, believe it or not, marked the first time she managed two Top Ten singles from any of her solo albums. It also won her a Grammy. But, none of it seemed to matter to WB. Most of the people who supported her earlier on in her career had left WB. She was very low priority at the label in the mid-90's. They didn't know what to do with her and thought it would be a good idea to turn her into a dance diva, which Chaka wasn't even remotely interested in. That's why "Dare" got the cold shoulder and was shelved. I'm glad she got out after that, with help from Prince.

FTG (FunkyTownGrooves) was a great label, indeed. They always, somehow, found lots of outtakes and bonus tracks for their reissues.I never checked out those Gladys Knight & The Pips reissues you mentioned but now I am curious smile

Found a link last night. Think I'll wait to savor while I keep the Grammys on mute -- the telecast was once my version of Super Bowl Sunday. Tonight, I'll be WAY more hyped for some new (to me) Chaka!

Also... "Hi" and XO

Hi everyone. I've been desperately looking for a link to download the lost album. Can someone give me a clue?

It's funny to see what happened with her during those 1995-96 days. Warner wanted her so sound as Mary J Blige when Mary J Blige wanted to sound as her.

But during 1992 era, Chaka Khan sounded more like Whitney Houston. So everybody in the music industry was busy making her crazy. Finally Prince helped her to get out of that situation and he gave her more liberty.

I'm not a Chaka officionado, but I do think her album with Prince, 'Come 2 My House' is a strong, underrated record.

My only issue is the silly song 'Democrazy'. Cool track and vocals, but the lyrics smack of naive conversations with Prince during his early JW phase wink.

Most, if not all, of these songs are available on YouTube. Many were eventually released on 'best of CK', various artist compilations or tv and film soundtrack albums.
