This is the only song on the album that didn't become a single (technically,"The Lady In My Life" wasn't a single either, but it still became a popular Quiet Storm radio favorite) and because of that,it still sounds fresh and new to me.It wasn't overplayed back in the day. When I listen to the album, this is usually the song I go to first,

It is so weird how I can remember the feelings and energy of hearing this music and viewing everything from back then. I mean the excitement and creativity broadened my mind so

Ha. There must be a rumor about him and Rebbie too because when I was a kid (way back in ancient times) the rumor was he and Janet were the same person.

Time keeps on slipping into the future...

This moment is all there is...

Technically, it was released on single since it was released as the bside of Human Nature.
So what would have been the point in re releasing it on single ?
It was even the Bside of IJCSLY !
.
Lady In My Life was the only track never released, when it could have easily been the 8th top ten off the album, with a music video.
.
Why it wasn't released as a single is one of the biggest mistery of the history of the music industry

I read it was considered but they probably saw no need. After the time the title track peaked, the album was the biggest in history and overexposure was becoming inevitable

They were getting ready for promotion for Victory by February 1984

State of Shock wasn't released to radio until June of 1984.

But it s true that in a space of a few months, the single market was oversaturated with MJ.
.
Say say Say peaked on December 1983,
then in January 1984 Somebody's Watching Me,
The Man was supposed to be released on February, then cancelled but it got some airplay
then Thriller peaked worldwide in march
Farewell my Summer Love peaked in June
State of Shock peaked on July...

.
It seemed a little overcrowded, but I think There was a window to release Lady In My Life in April 1984, for it to peak on may and would be gone for the release of State Of Shock.
.
Lady In My Life was the most potential hit of MJ that were never released, in part due to the popularity of MJ, and of course because the song is great and radio friendly
.
With a music video, the longer version as a Bsides, it would have been a top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and would have been an even greater achievement.
.
It would have been an all time classic for sure, another one for MJ s legacy. It s always good to take

also in the early summer of '84,many radio satations were playing "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin",Jermaine Jackson's duet with Michael, even though it was never reelased as an official single.

After the song "Thriller" peaked, there just wasn't any way to release any more singles from Thriller. The songs would have been competing with each other on the charts, lol.

Yes, Tell Me I m not dreaming peaked at #6 on the US airplay charts in June of 1984, and 3 weeks #1 in the dance clubs.
.
The same months, Farewell My Summer Love peaked at #8 in the UK.
.
But if I were Walter Yetnikov I wouldn't care about singles released under Motown (Farewell, Somebody's watching me), Emi (the McCa duets), Arista (Tell Me I m not Dreaming). I would just care about releasing hits under my label Epic.
.
I just checked the eurocharts, and I discovered that surprisingly PYT peaked at #16 on April for his new entry in this chart, while Thriller Ranked #25 (-13) in its 17 weeks on the charts.
.
The following week, PYT ranked at #18 (-2) while Thriller at #24 (+1)

PYT then exit the top 40 while Thriller climbed at #21, and Somebody's Watching Me peaked at #2 !
.
In fact, it shows that after the massive success of Thriller, Epic tried PYT in the European market, and it failed in an epic way (no pun intended).
.
It explains partly why Lady In My Life wasn't released despite the massive success of Thriller. Epic chose instead to sell the unsold US shipments of the PYT single. It failed mainly because after the movie-like Thriller, there was no way you could sell a MJ single without a music video.
.
I m amazed that Michael himself never pushed the release of a likely 8th top ten. That was really the easiest hit at the time.
.
So I think there was nevertheless really a window for releasing Lady In My Life in April, both in the US and Europe. Fuck Motown, Fuck Arista, and Fuck Emi.
.
Numbers and sales shows here their usefulness to explain artistic and commercials behaviours and decisions.

What a great position to be in,huh? I remember Madonna being in that position in the spring of ‘85.Her singles were all over the place and as a result, one of her most popular songs from that era—-“Into The Groove”—-wasn’t even released as a single! Warners didn’t want it to compete with “Angel”.It got trenendous airplay, though. If it had been a single,it would have been another Number One smash for her.

And it wasn't like Michael was using the opportunity to release more music via b-sides.

By the time December 83 came around, the album sales were through the roof so no point in releasing Baby Be Mine or Lady In My Life. By December 84, the album was 20x platinum in the US and over 30 million worldwide

There were stations doing "No Michael Jackson" Weekends lol

In my humble opinion, the best MJ song. Love it! I suppose I ain't alone in this opinion. Such an emotional song and such emotional lyrics.

I was wandering in the rain
Mask of life, feelin' insane
Swift and sudden fall from grace
Sunny days seem far away
Kremlin's shadow belittlin' me
Stalin's tomb won't let me be
On and on and on it came
Wish the rain would just let me
How does it feel (How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside
Here abandoned in my fame
Armageddon of the brain
KGB was doggin' me
Take my name and just let me be
Then a beggar boy called my name
Happy days will drown the pain
On and on and on it came
And again, and again, and again
Take my name and just let me be
How does it feel (How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel (How does it feel now)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside
How does it feel (How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel (How does it feel now)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside
Like a stranger in Moscow (oh, not the same)
Like a stranger in Moscow (oh, not the same)
We're talkin' danger
We're talkin' danger, baby
Like a stranger in Moscow
We're talkin' danger
We're talkin' danger, baby
Like a stranger in Moscow
I'm livin' lonely
I'm livin' lonely, baby
Stranger in Moscow
