Jack White

I saw Jack White in Brooklyn last night, great show. I was front row in a standing room section, got to see the musicianship and intensity up close. After Prince's passing White might be my favorite contemporary musical entity. Whenever I saw Prince play I said "there's a musician." It was undeniable. Watching White play elicits the same feelings. Always good to see real music by real musicians.

I think he's an incredible musician, and it's so emabarassing that I haven't seen him perform live yet boxed (in any of his projects). What do you think of his most recent album?

If you will, so will I

I havent listened to the entire album. Songs like Corporation, Over and Over and Ice Station Zebra are very engaging though.

I have seen him a couple times live - he is incredible and has command of the stage. One of the best musicians out there.

Who dares question the greatness of Loretta Lynn razz?! And who knew Jack was into older women?

But seriously, Van Lear Rose is a 10.

I agree Van Lear Rose is excellent.

What is your opinion of the Olivia Jean solo record?

Snoozer. In aggravating fashion, because every second feels like the promise of a better time and then just before I am handed the golden briefcase, she drops it on the floor and it breaks.

Hah, well put. I like the Black Belles album a great deal, but similarly was disappointed with Bathtub Love Killings.

Agree to agree. I mean, I feel as if nobody but Amber Webber should be able to co-opt the Black Belles look, and in their most non-gothy, fleeting pedestrian moments, the Belles remind me of Sons and Daughters or Detroit Cobras, but yes, I really like that self-titled album. Though, I'm barely joking when I say I wish Lightning Dust would have hit us with that Black Belles look first! (It wouldn't work so much with Black Mountain). Webber has a voice that, should Satan present himself to Earth, will most certainly be called upon to control the beast. She's our only hope, in fact.

Totally agree, love Jack White, and get all of his special Third Man record sets. He is the closest thing we have to a prince I do believe.

He's a very talented guy, and for me, far more important as a curator of others' work than as a musician in his own right....

I liked The White Stripes when they first came out, but all their music for me is strangely airless and shallow, just rehashing styles of the past. It has no real substance of its own, and I quickly tired of those albums. Same with all the alumni/side projects he's put out and his solo stuff.

I like him as a persona and like what he does with Third Man Records, but my interest in his own music dried up very quickly.

Sons And Daughters, that's a band I haven't heard mentioned in awhile. I saw them on the This Gift tour years ago and that's a great album. The Detroit Cobras I know as well, but I'll have to investigate Lightning Dust and Black Mountain. They sound like my kind of thing.
