“Teddy Pendergrass – If You Don’t Know Me,” the upcoming feature documentary that tells the tumultuous life story of the R&B and soul legend, will go out on Showtime in the U.S. and Sky Arts and the BBC in the U.K., where Moviehouse will also handle a theatrical release.

Producer and director Olivia Lichtenstein made the film through U.K.-based factual TV and film banner Storyvault Films. It came about after she watched watching “Supermensch,” Mike Myers’ movie about Hollywood power player Shep Gordon, who was also Pendergrass’ manager. “I called Shep and said, ‘People don’t remember Teddy the way they ought to, and I have to make this film,’ and Shep said, ‘Let’s do it,’” Lichtenstein recalled.

I really enjoyed the docu. I always agreed with what Teddy's manager (Shep Gordon) said on what he thought caused the car accident.

I'm an hour in the doc as I type this, and I must say I'm so impressed and amazed and all the quality work put into this project, by the RIGHT people. the clips, the pictorial footage, the label personnel, the agents, musicians, family members, and most importantly, the HONESTY. There was no white-washing regarding the car accident, and who was or wasn't. She had her say, and that was that. The post-accident clips were really heartfelt, and got me misty-eyed.

Well done, and I hope this also serves as a lesson for any future documentary projects on how to do a proper documentary.

I watched it. I was disappointed how they just glazed over everything that happened after his appearance on Live Aid.

What happened? I'm not well informed about his life beside the music till this documentary came along. The story about his manager Taaz was heartbreaking & scary

The documentery just treated everything that happened after 1985 as a small footnote in his career. He released several albums in the late 80's and 90's, with "Joy" being his must successful since the late 70's. I would have liked to have heard a little more about what he was experiencing during those years. The documentary just reduced those years to a few sentences flashing across the screen at the end.

As a sidenote, that live rendition they showed of him performing Lionel Ritchie's "Lady" was fantastic. Too bad there was no studio version to appear on an album. Perhaps there is a studio version that's collecting dust somewhere.

Watched it over the weekend and agree with the above statement. Otherwise, it's a very solid documentary and worth watching for anyone that appreciates '70s R&B.

I felt the same way watching The Two Killings of Sam Cooke which is on Netflix

Supposedly the cats in Philly weren't exactly clean themselves. Dangerous zone.

Didn't U get the implication that Teddy was involved with his manager's death? Sure seemed that way to me... Bandmates commenting : "Teddy came along with us that time (which was unusual)" ....the "Sense of relief" after hearing the news when CALLING BACK HOME....


anyways... it was a great doc. I'm glad they basically put things out there and let the viewer determine what based upon the factors. Not a conclusive agenda other than focusing on the man's life

I thought it was a great doc.

His cover of "Lady" was simply brilliant. Too bad it never got to see a release.
