If Genesis was added like Wham! with George Michael, I think Phil Collins would be higher. I'm surprised Rick Springfield would be ahead of Billy Ocean, Bryan Adams, Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine, Def Leppard, & Don Henley. I heard them all the time on the radio in the 1980s. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. People forget Rick Springfield between 1981-85 was pretty untouchable, had 16 top 40 singles, one came in 1988, and also 4 straight multi platinum albums. Rick was so big he charted A B-side in 1984. Billy Ocean had a few big singles then was gone, Def Leppard had too much distance between their albums, though there were a bunch of singles from them they came from just two records. Yup this was mainly because of the stigma still attached to The Bee Gees in America, since Barry produced it and they all did vocals on it and their own version too, the song was big elsewhere in the world. You could say that for Michael Jackson & Whitney Houston too and Mike is #1. Whitney literally only has 2 albums in the 1980s, which is not the case with Def Leppard or Mike if you include The Jacksons albums Triumph, Live, & Victory. Mike wasn't really on the 2300 Jackson Street album. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. But billboard goes on a points system when compiling, almost every single Michael and Whitney released and to my memory Michael had 14 from just Bad and Thriller all were top 10? Whitney I forget but she had a bunch of number ones right away. Def Leppard has 11 singles and a few peaked well down the charts including the first single from Hysteria which peaked at 80 and also Bringing on the heartbreak though well known, peaked at 61 on the hot 100. For Springfield though he is known for Jessie’s Girl because of its iconic riff, all his singles after it hit the the top 40 from then till 1988 with one exception a charted B side. Someone not mentioned that actually comes closer than those mentioned is Richard Marx because in the window of 87-89 he nailed down 7 top 5 singles and had his early 90’s been included he’d be on this list. Oh yes! I used to listen to Timur's show all the time! =) . Used to sing 'Kilimanjaro rises like a Lapras (as in the Pokémon) above the Serengeti', then trying to figure out if it was 'leperess' or 'leopardess' before learning it's 'empress'. XD . I don't want your rhythm without your rhyme

lastdecember said: Olivia “Physical” is number one because it was number one for ten weeks and billboard when it compiles these things at least in other decades it does it on a point system and since no other song in the decade stayed at one that long it comes out on top. I don’t think any of these songs are bad, maybe cheesy, Stevie’s songs both are a little cheesy but they are good songs. Olivia was a huge star and also that single was perfect timing because it’s when everyone starting in the workout craze so she was right on it with timing, similar to Diana Ross doing Muscles. That ranking, indeed, charts the most popular songs of the 80's on Billboard 's rankings based on an inverse point system. However, the best selling single of the 80s in the US was We Are The World.

Diana had her most successful period as a solo artist at the beginning of hte 1980's, with 8 top 10 hits. Endless Love being #1 for 9 weeks, Upside Down, I'm Coming Out, It's My Turn, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Muscles, Mirror Mirror, Missing You. Hall & Oates had 13 top 10s, 22 top 40s & 5#1 singles, in 80s. Obviouosly, they have included George Micheal & Wham together .. I wonder if they did the same with Phil Collins and Genisis

Houston had other music and songs that charted, like the Olympic theme song and that awful deut with Aretha Franklin that didn't crack the top 40. Jackson Say, Say, Say with McCartney. But it doesn't matter how many albums you had out, it's about getting your singles promoted. Jackson and Houston had loads of money poured into their careers in comparison to other artist.

People confuse charting and then performance, Prince released more albums than say Jackson or Madonna. But Jackson's record company promoted his singles and release more singles from his 3 albums. Prince had 26 singles that charted, Jackson 20. Madonna 19, Billy Joel 22, Hall & Oates 21.The old business model (get an album out and a couple of singles, to promote it) vs the new business model record an album and release and promote the album (by releasing and promoting it's music) 4, 5, 6, 7 singles from one album was the new business model in the 1980s. Prince's biggest album was essentially a movie soundtrack, which helped promote the album (and determine singles). Not all artist were lucky enough to have a record companies that would make videos and then promote the music, videos were self promoting if they got played (and seen). Promotion even for artist with names (well known) was essential. Geffen Records collected many big names, who suffered at the label because of lack of promotion (or attention at the label).

Agreed, Prince was prolific not just by virture of his recordings, but his music being covered by other artist Cyndi Lauper, Tom Jones, Melissa Morgan, artist he wrote songs for Chaka Khan, The Bangles, Sheena Easton, Shelia E. Artist's he was responsible for Shelia E, Vanity, Wendy & Lisa, Morris Day & the Time. He was the top artist world wide, had 20 top 20 singles and 5 #1 albums. https://tsort.info/music/...rtists.htm [Edited 1/12/19 7:11am]

Rihanna, Adele, Kanye West, & Taylor Swift are supposed to release new albums in 2019. So the big single of the year will probably be from Adele. Rihanna's music will likely be popular too, her makeup line has been successful and she was in a hit movie last year (Ocean's 8).
