Top Billboad songs of the 80s

SiriusXM is currently counting down the top songs of the 80s based on Billboard charts. I only caught songs 17-1. There’s some really bad songs here. How the heck the were so popular is beyond me.

17 When Doves Cry - Prince
16 Starting Over - John Lennon
15 Jump - Van Halen
14 Say Say Say - Paul McCartney
13 Like a Virgin - Madonna
12 Eye of the Tiger - Survivor
11 What a Feeling - Irene Cara
10 Lady - Kenny Rogers
9 Centerfold - J. Geils Band
8 Call Me - Blondie
7 I Love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett/Blackhearts
6 Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
5 Ebony & Ivory - Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder
4 Every Breath You Take - The Police
3 Endless Love - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
2 Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes
1 Physical - Olivia Newton John

I bolded the ones I think are the worst though there’s a few others I don’t love and certainly wouldn’t stick in the top 20 songs of the 80s.

Here's the Dutch Charts' Top 17 of the 1980s for comparison:

17. '19', Paul Hardcastle

16. 'When the Rain Begins To Fall', Jermaine Jackson & Pia Zadora

15. 'Into the Groove', Madonna

14. 'When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going', Billy Ocean

13. 'Purple Rain', Prince

12. 'Don't Leave Me This Way', The Communards

11. 'Nightshift', The Commodores

10. 'Lambada', Kaoma

9. 'Someone Loves You, Honey', June Lodge & Prince Mohammed

8. 'De vogeltjesdans', De Electronica's (Dutch version of 'The Chicken Dance'/'Birdie Song')

7. 'Dancing in the Dark', Bruce Springsteen

6. 'Eternal Flame', The Bangles

5. 'We Are The World', USA For Africa

4. 'I Just Called To Say I Love You', Stevie Wonder

3. 'How 'Bout Us?', Champaign

2. 'Nikita', Elton John

1. '(I've Had) The Time of My Life', Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes

.

The absence of MJ was surprising to me, even more surprising to learn that apparently his highest charting single on the list is 'One Day In Your Life', at #107 (!). 'Smooth Criminal' is #116, 'Beat It' #125, I Just Can't Stop Loving You' #163, and 'Billy Jean' #234.

Olivia “Physical” is number one because it was number one for ten weeks and billboard when it compiles these things at least in other decades it does it on a point system and since no other song in the decade stayed at one that long it comes out on top. I don’t think any of these songs are bad, maybe cheesy, Stevie’s songs both are a little cheesy but they are good songs. Olivia was a huge star and also that single was perfect timing because it’s when everyone starting in the workout craze so she was right on it with timing, similar to Diana Ross doing Muscles.

Yeah, I remember all of those. Especially The Bangles and Warnes/Medley, they stayed at #1 for weeks, maybe even months. And as for Michael Jackson, maybe he was a little overhyped (but we could say the same about Prince.) The single Bad raced to #1, but was replaced after one week by Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up which also stayed at the top spot for a long time. I don't see it on the list, maybe it's #18 or something?
Why do the lists start at #17?

In America Rick stayed at number one for two weeks only he dethroned George Michaels Father Figure for the spot and then Rick was dethroned by Michael J with Man in the mirror, the longest peak at number one that year was Steve Winwood Roll With it for four weeks, 1988 had 33 different number one singles.

rogifan only heard #17-#1 of the chart, and listed them; so I figured I'd also only post the top 17 songs.

.

'Never Gonna Give You Up' is #79 on our '80s chart. I kinda expected it to be higher up!

It's from an old site I used to check out a lot, called top40web.nl.

Here's the 80s Top 250: http://top40web.nl/jrn80/09.htm

.

top40.nl only lists the Top 100 of the 80s, but both are based on the number of points accumulated by the songs (40 pts for one week at #1, 1 point for one week at #40, etc.).

Aw you don't like "Say Say Say"?

By this time next year when we get a list of the top songs of the 2010s, I can't imagine it stacking up to even of lower selection of these hits. This decade has been a joke.

The top 17 here is in a slightly different order, but it's all there in the top 20. Upside Down (Diana Ross), All Night Long (Lionel Richie), and Maneater (Hall & Oates) would round out the top 20. Unfortunately, the best song of all time (Love is a Battlefield), is nowhere to be found.

No Queen songs?

This list sucks...

Although it redeems itself a bit with Blondie and Prince.

Still blows my mind that Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks are in the RRHOF but Pat Benatar isn’t. For shame.

Hall & Oates were a huge deal in the 80's. To this day they are still considered the most successful duo in pop music history. Granted, their haven't been a ton of musical duos in the mainstream but those dudes were well-loved. They've always had mad respect from the black community as well which is likely part of the reason George is so high on this list.

Diana had "Upside Down", "I'm Coming Out" and "Muscles" though Idk how those managed to reel her to #19. It would be nice to see a breakdown of each artist to explain exactly why they ranked in where they did.

^Don't forget 'My Old Piano', her covers of 'Chain Reaction' & 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love?', and 'Endless Love' with Lionel Richie.

Though if this list is based on 'total chart appearances', maybe it's based on how the number of singles that charted and not on how these singles actually performed.

Didn't know about the first 3, forgot about the 4th one. "Endless Love" was #1 for 10 weeks if I recall correctly.

That could be true though if these are official listings from Billboard, I would think they would be going by the actual performance of these singles. Idk for sure...

My bad, 'Chain Reaction' wasn't a cover! Something about that song made me think that there was an earlier version of it in the 60s, its structure reminds me a lot of old Motown songs.
