I know u r Disappointed just think for a moment how I feel. Doc said to much pressure on my Inner-Ear & Right Hand. Yeah, I had to make up my Mind so I did. 2019 Sheriff Ping Ping Ping will continue to Funk from the Studio but Not Live playing Bass on Stage. I know u got question & I don't have answers, maybe one day u to will understand. Just remember; That This Year will be the Funkiest Year of them All. Watch for it. Bootsy baby!!!"

I'd heard something similar from my friend when seeing Bootsy "perform" live last summer. The audience was really bummed out. Assumed it was because the show was "free" (he hadn't played locally in a while free or otherwise) they left pretty upset that he hadn't played or done much more than hype his own song and walk around taking photos with people.

Helluva entrance however. ..but I'd asked my friend about it who met with Boots after the show. Said the same thing. Post surgeries he'd been advised to stay away from that crunching bass for some neurological issue with his inner ear and hand. It's sad but he's gotta do what he can. Guess he's finally made the decision to set it outright

First of all, I'm glad he sent this message, because now we know what's going on. If he can't play bass anymore, then so be it. Bob Dylan doesn't play guitar anymore on stage either, but there's a difference: nobody goes to Dylan shows for his guitar playing. People go because they love his songs. A Bootsy concert without him on bass, however, is like an Eric Clapton concert without him on the git-tar. So if Bootsy cannot play the bass anymore because of health reasons and he wants to coach young musicians, then he should do it behind the screens.

Bootsy has to do what's best for Bootsy. I just hate I missed the opportunity to see him live

once 2 years ago with The Time and Kool & The Gang. Hopes he enjoys the fruits of his

labor. There is life after entertainment.

First George, now Bootsy... It's a SAD year for P-Funk.

But I'm glad they chose to quit rather than killing/harming/exhausting themselves.

I was blessed to see them both on stage in the 90's and 00's. I hoped to maybe see them again one day, but I guess I won't. I will cherish the memories forever, and I hope they'll still be with us for a long time yes

He can still be active if performing is no longer on the table. Like producing/mentoring or like Patrice Rushen, who doesn’t record/perform - well she didn’t retire officially but her appearances are scarce - but she shifted her attention to teaching & doing seminars. Bootsy has both the charisma of an engaging speaker & the knowledge/wisdom to draw from. Mind you, IF that’s a direction he wishes to pursue. Be that as it may, I hope he’s happy like he made many of us happy.

I thought Bootsy had already retired from playing bass; I guess he's just making it official. I'm glad I got to see him still perform in 2015.

I felt for some time that he was gradually pulling away from it. He has not really played a lot of bass in concert for some time now. He would come out and "spank" it a few times but other than "I'd Rather Be With You" where he'd give this monster solo, there wasn't much. He had another bass guy in the back handling most of the heavy lifting.
Unlike The Dr, it's not like he's been this big time road dog either. Shoot, I've only actually seen him live fronting The Rubber Band like 3 times. Saw them in'81, again in '93 and then 2012 supporting Funk Capital.
It still hurts my heart to see him officially hang it up though. Ever studio Fonk-N on bobba.
