Tevin Campbell’s top 5 singers all time

Tevin Campbell (@tevincampbelll)
8/18/18, 10:51 PM
ARETHA, WHITNEY, PATSY CLINE, SAM COOKE, DONNY HATHWAY. Can we do 6 and include LUTHER? Wait, lets do 7 and include STEVIE!!! This is hard.

I think his list is good though I don’t know if I could limit to 5. I’d want to throw Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Al Green on the list, oh and Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald and Karen Carpenter too.

EDIT: one I should add is Lena Horne.

Only 5? Yeah, that's hard. There's plenty of great vocalists that leave me as cold as ice. Whitney Houston is a good example. Five singers who really make me feel what they are singing:
James Brown
Marvin Gaye
Prince
Kate Bush
Bob Dylan

Tevin was very discerning. I would not argue against any of the singers listed here being highly regarded, but IMO, jazz and (pre-rock) pop contain some of the best voices of all time, including, but not limited to,

Ella Fitzgerald
Sarah Vaughan
Carmen McRae
Billy Eckstine
Johnny Hartman (perhaps the most underrated singer of all time)
Frank Sinatra
Tony Bennett

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I thought of Diana Ross but someone has to be miss the list Diana Ross gets an A rating but not the A plus rating imo becuase of her limited vocal range. Her voice sounded consistantly the same thru out her recordings and career.

I always thought Diana Ross was the baddest lady on the planet. Seriously. It wasn't just her voice. It was her class, style, elegant beauty and talent. Beyonce now holds the throne. Beyonce is currently the baddest women on the planet IMO. Diana Ross handed her the baton. In my lifetime, the two baddest women I've ever seen. Madonna would make my top five not because of her talent but because of her longevity, successful career, and she's a bad ass business women. Oprah Winfrey & Michelle Obama would round off my top 5.

And what about JANET JACKSON?! It wouldn't even be a Beyonce without her.
