MJ: The Bad Outtake vs. the album cut

I just watched the video for "Another Part of Me" (with Sheryl Crow on backing vocals, which is still such a trip). Anyhoo - it's still not a favorite song. I think most MJ fans know the story of Quincy, Frank, & MJ playing the two songs and Frank shaking his fat ass to "Another Part of Me", giving it the extra boost it needed to get on the record.

However, I happen to be a much bigger fan of "Streetwalker" (which was in Moonwalker and would end up later on the 2001 release of Bad as an outtake bonus track).

So the vote is this: which do you prefer? "Another Part of Me" or "Streetwalker"?

PS I think they could have ditched "Just Good Friends" & replaced it with "Streetwalker" & it been a 25% better record for that alone. Let APOM be a b-side or solely for Captain EO.

"Another Part Of Me" is my favorite song on the album headbang

but I agree with you,"Just Good Friends" should have been ditched. It's just not a good song.

Fun fact: Variations of the intro to Streetwalker has been used as an intro to Smooth Criminal on stage many times.

Another Fun Fact: Streetwalker was the initial inspiration for Dangerous (the song). An early demo version of Dangerous has a very similar rhythm arrangement to Streetwalker.

Another Part Of Me is the superior song IMO, but yes it could have easily replaced Just Good Friends. Although I learned to appreciate JGF over the years.

Michael had a ton of great material ready to go for this album and for Dangerous as well. Some his final choices were dubious, imo.

What are the out takes for the dangerous album?
We're here, might as well get into it.

Hmm, I love Streetwalker, but I think Another Part Of Me is the stronger cut.

"Just Good Friends" isn't that bad. However, it's not a song I usually pursue, "Streetwalker" is hot but it still has that incomplete demo feel to it. I guess it could have been a decent replacement for JGF.

"Another Part of Me" belonged on the album. The song fits right in and slaps in it's on special way; one of the funkiest songs on the LP.

Frankly, Bad and Dangerous are great as they were released.
I prefer Steetwalker too, but that s not the question. It was too controversial at the time, So the choice is understandable.
.
What is less, is why MJ never reused this kind of stuff for, say, Invincible or an hypothetical follow up? This would have been à smarter move for his carreer. I really hated when hé ditched such great material in various compilation s, instead of re recording them for a great album.

The musical bridge/break toward the end of the song is too short though.
And this song needed to end properly with à bang, not with à fading, really inappropriate here.

The radio edit (which is longer than the album version) ends better imo

And the thing is, Bad was altered after its initial release, with many of the songs being remixed a bit or a radio or single edit inserted. I finally found an original pressing of the record (they aren't differentiated in any other way than to listen or check track times) last year and was quite happy to buy it.

I swear I mentioned that on the Org somewhere, but I can't find it off hand (at 3:43am). But it's on the wikipedia page for the album. The best way to tell is to listen to "Bad". The horns are taken out of later pressings and only come in on the very last chorus. In the original pressing, they're in the song throughout. "The Way You Make Me Feel" was beefed up, "Smooth Criminal" was changed 3 times; other songs were replaced with single remixes.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I am surprised about the horns on "Bad". We had the 45 of "Bad" (b/w "I Can't Help It") and I can't rightly recall if it had already morphed.

It seems that they decidedly put more pop into the album and took out the R&B elements. The horns, while not exclusively R&B, removed certainly gives it a more pop-friendly feel (at the time). And of course, the spoken intro to "IJCSLY" was removed. That's another tell of a reprint or the original pressing. Even the 2001 CD remaster, I believe, had all these edits on it, although it's been a minute since I've listened to it. I'm pretty happy about having an original LP.

One reason they went back to do another mix of the album was because of the lawsuit from Hugo Zucarelli (inventor of Holophonics) and realizing it was basically a snake oil situation

Personally, I would've used GET IT than "Good Friends." Though it's featured on Stevie's CHARACTERS album, it too could've been as originally on MJ's BAD album.

Many songs off the album were sped up at 5% : Bad, Smooth, Dirty Diana...to give the album à more punchy sound. It was a common Practice at the time.

That s You Will Know. Such à mémorable song, you Can t even recall its name.

I like it too, but that doesn t mean it s good. It s embarassing, and not from the level of its following albums. I mean, nobody told Stevie back in 1987 that his album was pure garbage? Was hé forced to release it?

Brad Sundberg and Bruce Swedien said it in conferences. It was also discussed in Gearslutz by his various engineer when Michael died.
