We’ve heard about the rumors surrounding Lauryn Hill and her strange behavior for years now. Hell, if you’ve attempted to attend one of her concerts in the past few years, you might have seen it firsthand. But those closest to the legendary rapper/songstress, those who have worked with her, have kept quiet…until now. Multi-Grammy and Emmy award-winning jazz musician Robert Glasper spilled all the tea. He addressed quite a bit of the rumors, the allegations that she steal music and whether or not you can look her in the eye. See what he had to say below. When he sat down with The Mad Hatta Morning Show on 97.9, the host asked if there were artists who were known for their rude and reckless behavior.

I thought she was crazy. Like Sly Stone crazy. But I never knew she treated people like shit. Bet the rest of The Fugees have some great stories about her. I would like to hear their beefs.

Robert: She took the credit for making the classic album. Those songs were written by other people and they did not get their credit. She likes to take credit so she can become this super person. If you’re a super person and you’re that talented… Host: …Do it again.

she really should have given those guys the proper credit and called them back again to produce a follow-up album. It appears that she (and her record company) were trying to make it seem like she was an amazing musical genuis who could do it all.She didn't need to do that...her own talents were quite impressive already. There was no need to overreach and deceive the public like that

I feel sorry for Lauryn. This behaviour is obviously outwardly projected symptoms of some messed up history and/or mental health issues. I wonder when and why she started to go off the rails? I think the Fugees met in college, I wonder what she was like then...? Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

Something tells me Lauryn Hill has been raised/chosen to be spoiled and entitled, with her teenage beauty earning her a spot in this 1991 MC Lyte video, two years before appearing in Sister Act and just shy of signing a major label record deal all before turning 20?????????????

I don't know all I do know is that all I see are credits in the liner notes of Miseducation. My intuition tells me that this album could NOT have been made without Lauryn Hill, and no "hip hop" album by a female has come close since.
And correct me if I'm wrong but does she have to touch an MPC to be classified as a producer? It was her project. I always got the impression that Lauryn wanted a certain sound and feel and she hired people who could deliver that. I can see her going to one of her people and saying,"I like this or that Bob Marley track. Can we get that sound or those singers for this track?"
Most importantly the writing, the lyrics, are all her. Content-wise that's the most important thing.

But isn't Glasper's argument that if she is such a talented, prolific writer - how can she not do it again? Two discs of Unplugged, sure it likely launched Kanye West's solo career but she didn't even want to be on his track. His track alone outshined that entire project, people didn't even know it was her song when he put the Syleena version out, despite the bootleg having the Lauryn sample. It wasn't even that clever of a song "The Mystery of Iniquity". . The only catchy song she did since Miseducation was the Surf's Up song "Lose Myself" and she rambled like a mofo on that one too, similar to Neurotic Society, the Joss Stone guest appearance, the John Legend guest appearance. Mumbled baloney disguised as filet mignon. She is the female Sly for the new generation. if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

Unplugged has some really interesting lyrics and ideas.I wish she had taken those songs and brought in the Miseducation producers to help her turn those lyrics into amazing songs.

It’s bullshit to say she’s only done one classic album. “The Score” is one of the best albums of the 90s, no qualifiers needed. It’s obviously not a Lauryn solo work, but the whole album catches fire when she comes on. I think she got caught up in proving herself, post wyclef, and didn’t give credit where it was due. Mix that with a healthy dose of mental illness, and...I wouldn’t want to be in a room with her, let alone in her band. Good for this guy in holding his ground, and demanding his money.

I love "Mumbled baloney disguised as filet mignon", and agree completely. I disagree that Lauryn won't stand time, and Sly will. As someone born in 1980, I can say me and my friends adore Lauryn, and still play The Score and Miseducation regularly. There are articles about the inexplicable cultural fascination with Lauryn and Miseducation. Just today, there's an article in Time Magazine, and Spotify is celebrating Miseducation - 20 years on. The music did stand the test of time. On the other hand, I struggle to find any Sly - ANY SLY - that speaks to me. I know he's important, and nothing better underscores the scene in the movie when the main character gets into drugs, but the murk and the inpenetrable hippie / druggie culture of the late 60s / early 70s, is like music from a time capsule. I do love "If You Want Me To Stay", though. [Edited 8/25/18 13:44pm] [Edited 8/25/18 13:44pm]

But this is all TRUTH and has been the legend about Lauryn. Glasper is not saying anything that the industry has not known about her, no one wants anything to do with her because of the issues that he is speaking on. Concert Venues are beyond hesitant even hiring her because of fears of cancelling a day before or showing up six hours late and treating fans like enemies and the venue even worse. The same goes for Fiona Apple i can tell you from first hand experience that NO ONE will book her and there is an effort to make sure of this because of her meltdowns and walk offs at shows. Glasper is not dismising what she accomplished he is just speaking TRUTH you are not stevie or herbie etc...so I agree she is not a legend or an icon and should not be given that staus because she has not earned it. I agree with you. What I take issue with is people acting like she wasn't the driving force behind the success of the project. And the idea that shady things were going on when all I see is nothing but credits when I look at the liner notes. One album does not a legend make, but ironically it only takes one great album to be remembered.

It's not unheard of for artists to put their names in liner note credits when they haven't in fact made a contribution.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
My point is that everyone seems to be credited in the liner notes. I don't see Lauryn Hill's name all over the liner notes is my point.
