What was the story behind Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin collabing with Hall & Oates? How/why did that union come to be and how/why did it come to end? Are there any particular details behind these 2 duos coming together?

Daryl performed on shows with The Temptations in the 1960s. He was in a group called The Temptones. Daryl was also later a session musician for Thom Bell and Gamble & Huff before Hall & Oates started. So he knew some of the R&B/soul groups of that era.
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

John released an autobiography in 2017. I haven't read it, but maybe he mentions how the tour with Eddie & David came about. Thanks Micky. Gotta check out Oates' memoir. Should have brought it when it was still at Barnes & Noble.
