You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Ok then Skippy. You tell me which musician that emerged in the 21st century who’s been more influential and more iconic than Ye

for one, the man who gave Kanye his first real job, JAYZ....FOR 2, that man's wife, BEYONCE...

Oh hell naw, to this thread, the artist and the typo.

.

18 of those past 20 years the answer is Prince, last 2 years would be Gambino.

Nope. I said musicians who’ve emerged from the 2000s. Prince doesn’t count. He been in the game since late 70s/early 80s Gambino is up there

Even though I'm still not messing with anything-Kanye over his MAGA bullshit, I have a hard time arguing with this one. His production/beats set the tone of hip hop from 2002-2010, he (and Eminem) brought hip hop out of the post Biggie/2Pac cycle that it went through in the 90s, and his "great songs" became the soundtrack for a generation.

*

With that said, I'm expecting pushback on the above and I'll take it- just don't expect me to reply.

*

The only other artist that I can think of who can be considered "profound" in the last 2 decades would be Beyonce'- simply for changing the way the music business works for mega-stars. Sorry, but the biz hasn't been the same since she punked it with BDay.

I didn't dismiss Kanye argument out of hand, because of all the arguments you made.

But are we talking profound in terms of content, or in terms of impact? A case can be made for Ye either way, even though I wouldn't make it personally.

Tons of artists have created profound content since 1998, and a lot of folks listed here haven't made a whole lot of profound music per se. Kanye's best work has been profound. I'd take D'Angelo's two albums over most artists over that period.

But in terms of profound impact since 1998, which involves commercial success and cultural transcendence, I couldn't put Ye over a few like Bey. But he'd be up there.

Kanye has been bigger than Jay Z AND Beyonce in the 21st century #FACTS 🔥🔥🔥
Plus, why did Jay Z turn his back on Ye and not even show up at the wedding. He hasn’t been a good friend and I hope he returns to his senses and reconciles with Ye.....
