Any Five Star fans on the org?

I love Five Star's music. So many strong tunes - Rain or Shine, System Addict, The Slightest Touch etc.......Did u know that Lorraine was engaged 2 Eddie Murphy in the 1980's? She was 21 and he was her first romance. She said in a recent TV interview that he didn't treat her very well.

Loved them since the first time I saw "Hide and Seek" and "Crazy" on BET in 1985. I have all their LPs and was lucky enough to find all their '80s CDs pre-internet when a mofo had to go digging through used record store bins and department store racks. I saw Lorraine's interview on that trashy show. Seems like she was auditioning for a seat on the panel. Much saddened to hear about the rift with Denise and the current state of the group. I wonder what her other siblings feel about Denise touring as Five Star with 4 fill-ins for her brothers and sisters. Seems totally unnecessary to do that. I get Denise has not made much of a name for herself as a solo performer but she has been working steadily over the past decade or so and could bill herself as Denise Pearson of Five Star for the festivals she's doing. Everyone knows who she is. Anyway, I wish Lorraine continued good health after her cancer ordeal and all the best in her professional aspirations. And yeah, the brief Murphy relationship was well documented in 1988. It was barely a story then.

Edsel is putting out a new box set of all of the group's albums with all of the b-sides and remixes

1995's 'Heart and Soul' is not included. Neither is 2001's 'Eclipse', which is a mix of new songs and remixed songs from 'Heart and Soul'. This box set was personally curated by Denise and includes a signed picture of Denise. It appears she is Five Star now. Did Steadman, Doris, Lorraine, and Delroy all quit or were they sacked by Denise?

I would not say I am a fan but I really loved the song "All Fall Down" and their vocals on it, so much so that I tried to will myself through their catalogue one night, but that bubblegum production became too much to bear. The other song I remember liking a lot is "Brand New World", though they were really cribbing Dirty Jan by then.

Big fan here, i love their remixes. Still listen to their music. Think "Find the time", "System addict" and "Stay out" are my favourites. Its typical 80s dance music!

Go to the 2:33 mark. A lil' cheeky diss from Eddie LOL

Anyway I love 5 Star. Got all their main stuff 'til the surprisenly decent "Shine", which feels much less like a 5 star album and more of a faceless bunch of rnb lite tracks aimed squarely at the US market (which is fine by me LOL). Not surprising after their previous self titled and self written album bombed so badly though....

Iam tempted with the boxset for the remixes etc... and finally, those lovely instrumental b sides for us 80's geeks will be easily available (I can get rid of my 7" singles LOL) , so Iam tempted....

I liked System Addict (1985) I read I think in Jet or Fresh magazine back in the day, that they turned down an invitation to meet The Jacksons, due to work commitments.

I don't know if there's any truth to it but the wiki says the tracks recorded for 'Shine' were intended to be for a solo Denise album.

Not sure if they are the only act this happened to, but their 1991 track "Come to me (for love)" was jointly recorded at MJJ studios and their own studio. They even thank him too on the credits which is kinda sweet.

Sorta Karyn White mixed with some Janet Jacksonesque backing vocals. One of their sexier songs anyway.

Hmm, could make sense after their previous self titled album bombed on Epic also.

"The love you bring to me" is the solitary typically sunny/poppy 5 star song you would expect, but otherwise, most of the album hits the rnb harder then any album back to their very first, maybe further indicating a solo effort was intended as you mentioned....

They went deeper in the R&B bag with their last proper studio album, 'Heart and Soul".

I've noticed the British fans are more into the bubblegum/pop stuff and the American fans are more into the R&B stuff.

LOL, their vocals off the album that features "Brand new world" (called "rock the world" and released in '88) sounds at times much more like the pent up Michael Jackson "Smooth Crimnial" like vocal then Janet IMO. "Brand new world" song wise sounds like teenibopper AOR/ lite rock, which they did occasionally.

Heres some great pent up Michaelesque vocals for ya, check the chorus and breakdown inparticular:

Song is funky and bright anyway, but love the song extra because of those vocals LOL

Denise has done some shows in the UK with Tito Jackson where she sings some of J5/Jacksons songs. If the Jacksons ever were to tour with a new vocalist...Denise would be a no brainer.

I have Let Me Be The One on my playlist. I also like Whenever You're Ready.

I have a co worker who is 24 and she bears a striking resemblence to Denise Pearson.

Of course she didn't know who 5 Star was but she heard Let Me Be The One before.

She just smiled when I showed her a picture of Denise and that she reminded me of her.

I liked them back in the day. I purchased albums 1,2,3,4 & 5. Didnt care for the direction of album 4 all that much and album 5 was even less memorable. I dont recall Deniece's vocals which I found odd
She usually sang lead on most of their singles. I think my favorite album was #2. I've always wanted to check out the last 3 albums but haven't as of yet.

^^Another classic terrestrial radio has forgotten. Peaked at #2 on Billboard's R&B chart. Kept out of the #1 spot by Meli'sa Morgan's "Do Me Baby". Haven't heard this or any Five Star song on the radio since 1987.

in America, they seemed to fade away after 1987.One of the last songs I recall hearing from them is the 1987 single "Strong As Steel".

BET's Midnight Love used to play this in '94 but I never heard it on the radio. By this time, after years of virtually no promotion in the US, they lost whatever foothold they had on the US market.
