Exactly! He has no idea what he's talking about. In fact when I first heard the first chords of W.H.Y.D.F.M.L. I thought it was Prince. Until Janet's vocals kicked in. Then I thought Prince produced it. JJ admitted that his method of recording the "Control" album was taken directly from Prince. These people have nerve to try to school me on anything.
Prince even threw the "Control" cassette out of his car in front of JJ's house. That doesn't sound like a "friendly rivalry" to me! In fact Jimmy said he was VERY hurt about it.
Bull.Jam and Lewis developed their own sound and it doesn't sound anything like Prince.Keep in mind that, when Control came out,Prince was experimenting with orchestras and shit he wasn't even really doing "the Minneapolis sound" at that point, anymore. If Prince really did throw the Control cassette out of his car window,it's because (let's be honest),he was starting to see his ex-proteges have major success and he didn't like that.
there's an old docu from around 89, about the minneapolis music scene which only spent maybe 1/4 of it's time on the whole Prince/time/vanity etc.., retinue, and in it, Jam replies "it's a prince sound" that simple from the horses mouth. sure, they were great, did a lot of other things but at heart, the beginning for them was that "prince sound".

If you think WHYDFML was a Prince song, you don't know Prince music, or Flyte Tyme music. That means you have zero clue about anything. I can't even take you seriously on this one.
Speak for yourself...
"That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

They got fired for not following his rules
"We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."
Which WAS NOT to produce or work with anyone else in giving away Prince's signature Minneapolis sound to other artist.

Oh come on....they weren’t “giving away” the Prince sound to other artists.Obviously, the SOS Band doesn’t sound anything like Prince.Same with the Human League,Alexander O’Neal,New Edition and other artists that Jam and Lewis produced.
It’s just that Prince got paranoid whenever any of his protégés wanted to work with others outside the camp. When he saw Jerome in Janet’s “Control” video,he got pissed and fired him.In 1983,Morris wanted to do a song with Evelyn Champagne King, but Prince woukdn’t let him to do it.Notice a pattern here?

i didn't listen to everything they did but alexander's "fake" was definitely prince sounding. that one song they did for, who was it? mc5 or something, tender love, was a great ballad. talented dudes no argument there. I sent them my cd, they rejected me but i never held it against them, i was only carrying the minneapolis sound, not many people did.

I'm only repeating on what happened and what Prince felt & the reason he fired them. Of course Human League,Alexander O’Neal,New Edition, Johnny Gill, Kylmaxx,Force MD's etc. didn't sound like Prince.

Yes,they were definitely influenced by Prince.I’m saying that, unlike some of the other Prince protégés,they established themselves and came up with their own sound.A song like “If It Isn’t Love” by New Edition doesn’t sound anything like Prince. That is a pure Jam and Lewis/sounding song.

IMHO you both are right. I think they may have started out that way, but they really did developed their own thing over the years. They have such a diverse group of artist that they worked with and the sounds/songs IMO do not all have that same sound/vibe.

When I found out that was them, I was like, are you kidding me. That was my jam. I was seriously blown away when I found out they did Can you stand the Rain; my ALL TIME favorite NE song.
What was the raltionship between them like? Did they ever speak to each other? I only know Prince covered WHYDFML at concerts. He called her a "genius's sister", which was very mean. As far as I know, Janet didn't say anything about him after he passed away. I wonder if she dislikes him for what he said about her.
Don't know why, but I was wondering the same thing. I don't know if this was before or after I saw the Whitney movie and some comment was made about a teen star whose records were quickly moving up the charts; and hearing Whitney's mom call Janet a #it&h, got me to wondering about how the 80s stars felt about one another. It's obvious that other musicians and entertainers admired Prince, and vice versa, but not much these two.

Just because Prince was experimenting with orchestras at that time, doesnt mean he was creating this kind of music before. That said, if the story is true, the cassette thing is really silly.
Let's not get it twisted. Prince was indeed and will forever stand as genius, but he too borrowed and stole heavily himself from time to time. Also, up 'til Janet's infamous WHYDFML, Jam and Lewis have successfully found and created such a sound that was becoming more and more noticeable...groundbreaking! As part of The Time, that same band was Prince's worst nightmare. [Edited 7/29/18 23:38pm]

yes he did and i never doubted the stories that he stole a lot of stuff, particularly when he was just building his career. the tales of Prince leaving tape running for all the time's rehearsals are believable just because he was that machiavellian at that time. I don't know why such talented people steal shit but they do, they almost always do.

True! JJ said they stopped playing new music and riffs in front of Prince. Because Prince was like a sponge.

Pretty sure I heard a riff from Nasty Girl or another Prince tune in Janet's set at Panorama this weekend during What Have You Done For Me Lately, I think. Possibly during Nasty (which would make sense too) IDK the energy was crazy and I was slightly buzzed but JJ left the stage for a moment and a dancer was in one of the boxes on the right side of the stage when suddenly the riff changed quickly before returning to the tune.
.
It was definitely there and it allowed for one of several astonished smiles.

Janet also uses the main chorus riff from the Prince penned "Glamorous Life" in her hit song "Pleasure Principle"in her live show. Since that very cut already borrows the drum beat from "Glamoruis Life".

Janet's been a fan of Prince and The Time since their beginning. Hell, she even made her mom take her to a Prince concert back in their early days when The Time was still opening for Prince. This is well documented. So, it's a no brainer whenever you hear that MPLS sound come out...
-
Last glimpse on record was @ the 3:48 mark and throughout on this missed opportunity of a single from "Unbreakable."

Exactly!
But "Night" is nothing but the cousin to Prince's "Sexy Dancer". Another borrowed groove from Prince.
