10 Albums that mean something to you.

The rule is you can only mention one Prince album (but feel free to break it, it is after all your list)

1 Parade Prince and the Reveloution
2 The Beatles (the white album) The Beatles
3 Low David Bowie
4 Faith The cure
5 Dog Man Star Suede
6 Boys for Pele Tori Amos
7 Hounds of Love Kate Bush
8 Blue Joni Mitchell

9 A love Supreme John Coltrane

10 Round Midnight Soundtrack Dexter Gordon (with Herbie Hancock amongst others)

Apologies to many others..................

Very good topic! Something else than the usual '10 best'. I'll keep it with max 1 album per artist.

In no order:

- Mano Negra: Patchanka

- The Scene: Open

- Faith No More: ANgel Dust

- Bjork: Debut

- Metallica: ... and justice for all

- Simple Minds: New Gold Dream

- Red Hot Chili Peppers: Blood Sugar Sex Magic

- Prince: 1999

- Trockener Kecks: 1 op 1 miljoen/Betaalde liefde

- Gary Moore: Still got the blues

Just didn't make the list: The Doors - Pearl Jam - Coldplay

i just watched the criterion collection dvd of 'the last temptation...' a couple of weeks ago. there was a brief documentary detailing peter gabriel's recording of this album. i don't think i knew who billy cobham was whenever the last time i listened to it was, but i will listen with renewed interest the next time knowing he's in there. such a good album.

1. Prince - Purple Rain: Has gotten me through so many tough times in life, and soundtracked a lot of good times to.

2. Prince - 1999: Those long Prince jams that made me feel like I was in a club experiencing a legendary Prince aftershow. Danced to this with my headphones on in my room well in to the night.

3. Madonna - Erotica: Her first new album released after I became a fan. Was eleven at the time. Album taught me alot about sex, desire, eroticism, etc.

4. Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction: The first album from a rock band that was a band I discovered, rather than a rock band my Dad liked. Inspired me to learn guitar.

5. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon: An album from my Dads era / generation that I discovered that became an all time favourite and opened the door to explore music and bands from eras before my 'own' music era.

6. Michael Jackson - Thriller: First album I owned.

7. Ministry of Sound - Trance Nation One (1999): The soundtrack of my clubbing years, so many great tracks, so many memories of long nights on the dancefloor

8. Chrvches - Every Open Eye: The best band I discovered at my first and only Glastonbury (2016) ... showed me there's great new music out there from this generation.

9. Air - Moon Safari: Had alot of sex to this album biggrin

10. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run: Showed me the importance of lyrics and story telling in music

I don't think I can come up with 10 albums that have profoundly affected my life, that have molded me into who I am today. I can only think of five off the top of my head:

1. Prime Of My Life - Phyllis Hyman

2. Living All Alone - Phyllis Hyman

3. I Refuse To Be Lonely - Phyllis Hyman

4. Emotions - Mariah Carey

5. Ask Rufus - Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan

Nai Palm. Watch what happened on the second song of her first show outside Australia, in New York, in 2012, when she was mostly unknown - volume up, headphones, full screen, listen and watch. Prince was a big fan. He invited Hiatus Kaiyote to Paisley Park several times, but they never could make their schedules work. So he attended their show in Minneapolis and stood in the audience.

BTW, I'll definitely check out the albums from your list that I don't know. That's a great list.

I jokingly call HK Prince's children. But they sound like no other outfit in music, even though you can hear their influences. Maybe that's why Prince liked them so much.

i'm not a huge thomas dolby fan, but i've been listening to his 'sole inhabitant' album quite a bit over the last few months. it's really good. a live performance, just him and some synths, of some old and new stuff. highly recommended.

Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent d'Arby because it was my first LP ever!
Lovesexy by Prince
Stand! by Sly & the Family Stone
Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan
Those three albums introduced me to those artists and my life hasn't been the same ever since!
Diesel and Dust by Midnight Oil showed me that a band could write about social/political issues and still rock hard.
Clandestino by Manu Chao did the same from a Latin American perspective.
Here, My Dear by Marvin Gaye and Blood On the Tracks by Bob Dylan talk about love break ups in a way that touch me...

I guess I'll try to stick to the script. As far as Prince, Killing Joke, Donald Byrd, EW&F and Steely Dan, i would include more of their albums.

Prince-1999
Killing Joke-Night Time
Steely Dan-Gaucho
Roxy Music-Avalon
Metallica-Master of Puppets
Donald Byrd-Stepping into Tomorrow
Run-DMC-Raising Hell

Earth, Wind & Fire-Raise!(That's the Way of the World was a close, close second)

I'll get back to y'all for the last two.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

Beatles - Revolver (pretty much will always be there, influential borrowed cassette tapes my brother brought over - Incredible album to say the least

Alice Cooper - Love it To Death (also same as above; cassette) ...incredible band back n the day... Buxton/Dunaway -...ultimate Guitar & Bass combo... they're simply incredible, and these songs can take you anywhere... even through insanity/misery/brightness

Prince - The Rainbow Children - came at the right time for me... after HS, after a friend tried to pull me down with himself into the military... P's perspective and POV were heavily influential in my thinking and spiritual growth at the time (independent thought pursuits), themes of causation, manipulation, love, trust, spirituality, corruption, all about Menda-City...and his word plays... this one kept me thoughtful for years to come

Michael Jackson - Dangerous - Remember the Time? well.. that was about all I heard of it at the time. Not a musical family, and even when it did, my fam (brothers) all went towards metal almost singularly... I still sought this out in later years. To me it reflects his greatest songwriting and voice. (add on Someone Put Your Hand Out and it's bliss)
Gil Scott Heron - Freewill - Though he put out greater albums than this, the was representative of intellectualising the world I was thrown into.
Nirvana - In Utero - Though I don't hold them in as high regard anymore.. this album was peak writing, completely unforgettable. I can still play much of it in my head from memory

Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballe - BARCELONA - I still can't put this thing down. Despite now skipping La Japonaise sometimes as well as the Overture... It's an incredible piece of work that reigns triumphant. Fred, Montsy and Mike Moran make this incredible bold leap into multi tracked operatic rock bliss.
Eurythmics - Be Yourself Tonight - I feel this is their greatest album. Written by the duo with a peppering of musical collaborations from the Heartbreakers, it's edgy, warm, angered, spirited, sensual, melodic heaven. Possibly my favorite pick me up album.
Black Sabbath - Sabotage - Hard to pin down their meaning to me.. the band (Tony and GEezer) pretty much wrote the book on thoughful brilliant riff rock and stunning arrangements... The anger and hope expressed on this album, all probably appealed very much to younger me...still does

Megadeth - Youthanasia/Johnny Mathis - Open Fire, Two Guitars/Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning...Depeche Mode - Songs Of Faith and Devotion, Faith No More - King For A Day...., Esperanza Spalding - Esperanza... etc etc... I could really go on forever with this... sooo many albums influenced and shaped the person I have become... and so many have eased and soothed away things, inspired em...

nice topic... I stopped tastefully before going too far.
