bored2 I don't get why labels keep reissuing the same titles over and over again while there are still so many that have been OOP for decades or never had a CD release.

i feel ya Kit but im sure it has to do with rights reverting back to the artists. I missed out on Cameo Alligator Woman and DeBarge Rhythm of the Night. So I am getting those asap. BBR has been quiet on the reissue tip lately also

The reason the same titles are reissued over and over in the Japanese market is because it's a cheap way to grab some cash. All Universal have to do is pull the previous tape transfers (These titles are rarely remasters, if anything is done to the audio at all it's generally a volume increase only) and artwork and churn out a few hundred copies. These are usually snapped up quickly because the previous reissues have been out of print for a few years and are fetching high prices in the secondhand market. You will occasionally see a title that hasn't been on CD before but not often. Too much effort and cost would be involved to locate masters, bake the tapes and pay an engineer to do the transfer when they can simply put out a title already in their digital archives. In the last 10 years a number of reissue labels (FTG, BBR, Soulmusic.com, Expansion etc.) have paid the major labels licensing fees and incurred the cost of digitising their catalogs for them. I notice Sony Japan are starting to reissue these reissues (This has happened with a number of FTG titles) with identical tracklists even down to the bonus tracks. Unfortunately there's not much motivation for them to give us something that hasn't been out yet.

Which rights have reverted back to the artists? Universal have so aggressively acquired labels over the years that I'd be very surprised if they handed anything back to an artist.

The only title I noticed in this latest batch that has never properly been released on CD before is Atlantic Starr's "Radiant". It was released as a vinyl rip a few years ago by Vinyl Masterpieces. I hope Universal will use the master tapes for this one and not give us the same piece of garbage that came from Vinyl Masterpieces.

Description
As part of its best-selling anthology series, SoulMusic Records is very proud to present “Don’t Let It Go To Your Head,” a sumptuous 2-CD by the inimitable Jean Carne, one of the most consistently popular international song stylists in the world of soul-n-jazz.

Focused on her four-album tenure with Philadelphia International Records (1976-1981), this musically satisfying collection (compiled by SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan, who has been interviewing the soulful songstress since 1977 and provided stellar liner notes with extensive quotes from a 2018 interview with Jean herself) includes Jean’s much-loved dance classics, the set’s title cut and 12” single versions of the perennial ‘Was That All It Was’ and ‘What’s On Your Mind’ (making its worldwide CD debut).

In addition to key PIR album cuts, standouts include Jean’s unforgettable full version of The Spinners’ classic ‘Love Don’t Love Nobody’, the Eddie Levert-produced ‘My Love Don’t Come Easy’, and essential staples of Jean’s live repertoire (‘If You Wanna Go Back’, ‘Free Love’ and ‘We Got Some Catchin’ Up To Do’).

Other highlights include Jean’s take on the Philly classic ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’ (from Jean’s sole 1982 Motown set along with her version of Minnie Riperton’s ‘Completeness’); a plethora of guest duets – the US top 20 R&B hits ‘I’m Back For More’ (with Al Johnson) and the timeless ‘Valentine Love’ (with Michael Henderson) – alongside tracks with Dexter Wansel, Norman Connors, Roy Ayers and Grover Washington, Jr.

Georgia-born Jean’s recording career got its start on the first couple of albums by Earth, Wind & Fire and three famed early ‘70s jazz LPs with (ex-husband) Doug Carn. The fiveoctave vocalist began her association with drummer Norman Connors in 1974 and by the early ‘80s, Jean’s first performances in the UK created a love affair with European audiences that continues to this day.

With first-class mastering by Nick Robbins and great artwork by Roger Williams, “Don’t Let It Go To Your Head – The Anthology” is a remarkable testament to the timeless artistry of this soulful supernova.

Description
When Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack teamed up in 1983 to record the Capitol album BORN TO LOVE, the pair had already experienced success as a duo thanks to the 1980 LP, Live & More (a Top 10 R&B best-selling album). By the time they headed into the studio to cut BORN TO LOVE, Bryson was six years into his recording career and had established himself as one of the premier black male vocalists of the day; Flack was already considered an internationally-renowned artist thanks to classic recordings such as ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ and ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song.’

With tracks produced by songwriters Michael Masser, Bob Crewe and Bryson himself, BORN TO LOVE achieved gold status in the US as well as becoming both artists’ highest-charting international success. The impact of the now-classic single, ‘Tonight, I Celebrate My Love’ (co written by Masser, then known for songs such as Diana Ross’ ‘Touch Me In The Morning’ and Natalie Cole’s ‘Someone That I Used To Love’ and Gerry Goffin) was global, reaching No. 2 on the UK charts, No. 10 in Australia, No. 4 in Canada and No. 16 in the US).

The album also included two other charted singles, ‘Maybe’ and ‘You’re Looking Like Love To Me’ while ‘Heaven Above Me’ got radio and club play in the UK.This 2013 expanded edition of BORN TO LOVE includes three bonus tracks along with liner notes by Billboard Senior Editor, Gail Mitchell with new quotes from Roberta Flack.

Description
Millie Jackson has never had the full recognition she deserves as one of the great soul voices of the 70s as her theatrical ‘rap’ material became her signature sound. With “Exposed” we go a long way to rectifying that with a dozen remixes by producer/engineer Steve Levine.

Steve has piloted hits for a very wide range of artists from Culture Club’s huge chart successes to the Beach Boys and Motörhead, having collected a Grammy along the way for his work with Deniece Williams.

He has also produced the long-running radio programme, The Record Producers, in which he has worked with such greats as Holland, Dozier & Holland, Nile Rodgers, Brian Wilson and the late Sir George Martin.

A huge fan of Millie’s work, Steve’s background makes him the ideal man to bring these fantastic tracks into the 21st century.

These remixes stay true to the original recordings and the great musicians who played on them. No extra ‘beats’ have been added, everything you hear was played on the original versions. Some have been extended to accentuate the grooves and all have been opened out using modern technology to better hear the quality of the playing and recording.

Millie is loud and clear in the mix, exposing that great soul voice to maximum effect.

Tracklist
1. I Cry
2. If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want To Be Right)
3. It Hurts So Good
4. Sweet Music, Soft Lights And You
5. Kiss You All Over
6. Go Out And Get Some
7. Bad Risk
8. Help Yourself
9. A House For Sale
10. I'll Continue To Love You
11. My Man, A Sweet Man
12. Never Change Lovers In The Middle Of The Night

Description
SoulMusic Records is very proud to present the reissue of the first two classic albums by the legendary Pointer Sisters, expanded editions with bonus tracks (single edits of charted singles from each LP) a vivid reminder of the original quartet’s unique sound and style, prior to their global success of the ‘80s as dance and pop hitmakers.

By the time they signed to US West Coast boutique label Blue Thumb, the Oakland, California quartet of sisters – Anita, Bonnie, June and Bonnie – had begun their journey from the church where their father was a pastor to backup vocalists for diverse artists such as Elvin Bishop, Cold Blood and Taj Mahal.

A brief stint at Atlantic Records where they cut a couple of singles preceded the recording of their self-titled debut, produced by David Rubinson in San Francisco. With its heady mixture of swingin’ jazz pieces (‘Cloudburst’, ‘Jada’), gospel-flavoured blues (‘River Boulevard’) and covers of Koko Taylor’s ‘Wang Dang Doodle’ and the Lee Dorsey, Allen Toussaint-penned, ‘Yes We Can Can’ (a US top 20 pop and R&B hit), THE POINTER SISTERS became one of 1973’s best-selling gold-certified albums, showcasing the family group’s imaginative harmonies, with cover art depicting the quartet in ‘40s-styled garb.

1974’s THAT’S A PLENTY (another gold album) was equally eclectic in regards its song selection, from the fast-and- furious ‘Salt Peanuts’ (a Dizzy Gillespie piece) to the head-boppin’ blues ‘Grinning In Your Face’ (with a young Bonnie Raitt on guitar), on to bluesy torch song, ‘Black Coffee’, a revival of ‘Steam Heat’ and the Gamble & Huff- co-penned R&B, ‘Love In Them There Hills’. The single ‘Fairytale’ became a US Top 20 pop and a Top 40 country hit, and winning the quartet their first Grammy Award (for ‘Best Country Performance’).

In depth notes by renowned US writer Justin Kantor include 2018 quotes from Anita, Bonnie and Ruth Pointer chronicling their arrival on the music scene; with great remastering by Nick Robbins and first class artwork by Roger Williams.

Edsel is pleased to announce the release of a comprehensive Five Star box set, which has been personally curated by DENISE PEARSON. Five Star were managed by their Father, Buster Pearson who harboured the idea that his talented children could be the UK's 1980s version of an older Jackson 5. Following an appearance on BBC One's Pebble Mill in 1983, Five Star signed to RCA Records then spent 1984 honing their craft and performing at numerous club PAs around the country. They were rewarded in May 1985 with their debut hit 'All Fall Down', which reached #15 in the UK Singles Chart taken from the debut album 'Luxury Of Life', from which SEVEN singles were released. It was the final single from the album, 'System Addict', that charted the highest from the album and which started a run of nine consecutive Top 20 hits. This 9CD/1DVD set housed in a sumptuously packaged 12"x12" Deluxe Casebound Book, comprising the SIX studio albums from their international hit-laden recording periods with RCA Records and Epic Records. All six albums feature extra tracks, including non-album B-Sides, with the remaining three CDs containing 7" & 12" Alternate Versions and Remixes. The DVD features a number of Promotional Videos. RCA, Epic and Buster Pearson lined-up a stellar host of the most prolific Producers of the time to work with the Group. Nick Martinelli, Leon Sylvers III, Denis Lambert, Barry Blue, The Limit, Steve Harvey, Billy Livsey, Richard 'RAH Band' Hewson, Christopher Troy, Zack Harmon, Michael Jay, Wayne Braithwaite and Ian Prince, with Shep Pettibone, Morales & Munzibai and Paul Hardcastle mixing. There was no end of talent queuing up to work with Five Star.

The release features the original album tracklistings plus B-Sides, a multitude of alternate mixes, instrumental versions and more than 25 mixes previously unreleased on CD, bringing a two label collection together from the band's internationally successful career, for the very first time.

'Luxury...' features all Twenty-One UK Top 75 singles, including the Top 10 hits 'System Addict' #3, 'Can't Wait Another Minute' #7, 'Find The Time' #7, 'Rain Or Shine' #2, 'Stay Out Of My Life' #9, 'The Slightest Touch' #4, as well as their other Top 30 hits 'All Fall Down', 'Let Me Be The One', 'Love Take Over', 'If I Say Yes', 'Whenever You're Ready', 'Strong As Steel', 'Somewhere Somebody', 'Another Weekend', 'Rock My World'.

Description
Robinsongs are delighted to announce three fantastic Lakeside albums on a Double CD release, “Shot Of Love”, “Rough Riders” and “Fantastic Voyage” plus bonus tracks.

Lakeside were described as “The Rolling Stones Of Funk” by lead vocalist Thomas Shelby in a recent interview with Funk Chronicles: “We didn’t have a ton of major hits, but nobody wanted to come on after us. But the hits they did have all became funk anthems”.

“Shot Of Love” was originally released in late 1978, and charted on the Billboard album chart the following year. The album contained the hits ‘It’s All The Way Live’, a Top 5 R&B single, and ‘Given In To Love’. The ‘It’s All The Way Live’ single version is available as a bonus track on this package.

“Rough Riders” was released in 1979 and contained the singles ‘Pull My Strings’ and ‘From 9:00 Until’ and again those versions are available on this release as bonus tracks.

To finish the set “Fantastic Voyage” was Lakeside’s biggest album, which was a Top 20 Pop album and featured the No.1 R&B single of the same name, and the follow up ‘Your Love Is On The One’, another Top 20 R&B Hit.

Package contains sleeve notes by Christian John Wikane a New York based writer and music essayist and contributing Editor for PopMatters.
