Prince and Janet Jackson What was the raltionship between them like? Did they ever speak to each other? I only know Prince covered WHYDFML at concerts. He called her a "genius's sister", which was very mean. As far as I know, Janet didn't say anything about him after he passed away. I wonder if she dislikes him for what he said about her. full lips, freckles, and upturned nose

Not knowing any of the related parties, all I can do is speculate on the situation but I would doubt Janet Jackson took any serious offence to what Prince said. Certainly not enough to hold it against him after all this time. After all, there was a hint of truth about it. I know Janet has her fans but I'd imagine that she would even admit to her career being helped by her surname. Especially when she was getting started. Plus, I don't think she would be so egotistical to assume that if you were to ask any random person on the street to name the most talented Jackson, that they wouldn't say "Michael". Michael Jackson is, was and forever will be the crown jewel of that family. So she knows what the general perception is and I'm sure she would understand why Prince would make that kind of comment, even if it was intended to be tongue in cheek. As for why she never commented on his death, I honestly don't know of any reason why she would. I'm not one for knowing all about these people's personal lives but I've never heard of them being friends or anything. So she wouldn't have any reason to say anything. I mean, I don't think she said anything about George Michael when he died either. And again, why would she? So I don't think she disliked him but I also don't think she liked him. I think it's a case of her just not knowing him enough to care one way or another. But like I said, all that is pure speculation on my part.

It's a big music world and no matter how big the stars, some just never crossed paths much, if at all.

Now I don't know if it's true or not, but I remember reading long ago, somewhere (I forget where) that when Janet used to be making music in Minnesota with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, that Prince tried to get with her, but she wasn't interested, and was kind of scared of him and thought he was weird. I don't know, maybe that's the reason Prince made the comment, who knows?

Jam and Lewis wanted Prince to sing "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" with Janet. They envisioned the song as a duet.

Didn't he once throw her CD out of the car infront of Jimmy Jam's (or Terry's) house because he was mad at them?

jam and terry had a longstanding competition going back to their teens, it never ended, also, jam and terry stole their style form prince which they pretty much admit and a keen ear will tell you that some of the riffs on control were stolen from the prince and the revolution live show. few months ago, i got a great chuckle out of one of Prince's live perfromances from the mid to late 80's, he said "jimmy and terry, i don't want to hear this on your next album either!" as far as janet herself? why should he have any real opinion on her? she's not any kind of real artist or musician, if prince called her a genius' sister he was right.

W.H.Y.D.F.M.L. Is stolen directly from Prince. He made it clear on many of his shows by reclaiming it."That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

sure, also, i thought escapade was stolen from i could never take the place of your man.

one thing control had that i absolutely loved was the drum production being right in your face, prince never had his rhythms mixed that hot. it was certainly really good music, stolen or not.

I always assumed it was him acknowledging his friends taking things out of his playbook, but not flat out stealing one of his songs [Edited 7/25/18 0:45am] "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

everyone stole from him in those years, he always ignored it except with his own personal rivals.

The mixing ideas for the "Control" album was also stolen from Prince. JJ admitted it recently. But both JJ&TL were both mentored by the best. So it was inevitable. That's why Prince drove by JJ's house and threw it out the window and drove off."That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

you're wrong, when joe jackson said that he was talking about nasty lyrics and even there momma jackson wasn't happy with all that moaning shit janet did at the end. the live riff i referred to that they stole was the one from possessed in the live version. they stole plenty, jam called their sound "a prince sound" and never denied the link. they were great producers, probably had more actual hits than prince and they were nice guys but they got a lot from the great one.

also, i'd never seen the long version of control, i saw jerome in it, supposedly that's why P fired him.

Exactly! He has no idea what he's talking about. In fact when I first heard the first chords of W.H.Y.D.F.M.L. I thought it was Prince. Until Janet's vocals kicked in. Then I thought Prince produced it. JJ admitted that his method of recording the "Control" album was taken directly from Prince. These people have nerve to try to school me on anything.Prince even threw the "Control" cassette out of his car in front of JJ's house. That doesn't sound like a "friendly rivalry" to me! In fact Jimmy said he was VERY hurt about it."That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

Bull.Jam and Lewis developed their own sound and it doesn't sound anything like Prince.Keep in mind that, when Control came out,Prince was experimenting with orchestras and shit he wasn't even really doing "the Minneapolis sound" at that point, anymore. If Prince really did throw the Control cassette out of his car window,it's because (let's be honest),he was starting to see his ex-proteges have major success and he didn't like that.
