Wouldn't bother counting the charts after about 2005 ... pretty dead concept after that for most people.

RE: Bad by Michael Jackson. 'Leave Me Alone' and 'Liberian Girl' charted here in the Netherlands, hitting #5 and #14 on our Top 40 respectively. This racks up the hit single count of Bad up to nine (out of eleven album tracks), which is incredible.

Source? Is this list based on US Billboard Hot 100 chart entries? I ask because there are artists that never charted here but had great success outside of the US.

"Leave Me Alone" was a bonus track on the 'Bad' CD. I had the vinyl so I never heard the song until the video came out.

i have the vinyl ( = original) as well, so it's not really on the album. Much like 'into the groove' by Madonna.

I took the info off of a now dead forum:

And yes, it is based on US Billboard Hot 100 chart data.

I think Katy Perry has one of her records with 6 or 7, but to be honest now I can’t really take singles seriously because there is not a physical single and it’s almost about radio play and not sales in reality. So when albums back in those days like a Def Leppard or Springsteen etc...they were selling too plus millions of albums and getting radio and video play and touring now it’s streams and clicks and not really real.

Fearless never did have 13 singles. A lot of songs charted, but they weren't singles.

Which is the problem of today, with no physical singles if people like one song they can just buy that and if enough do, it charts well enough, when someone says the new single from so and so today, I am like NO ITS NOT.

Well going by that, then technically nothing today is a single or maybe a very few that are released as a 45 that costs $8. Do you consider it a single if it has a music video? Then how about that Lemonade album by Beyoncé. Decades ago, not all singles that had a physical 45 to buy got radio airplay. The Top 10 chart was mainly based on airplay & sales of 45s. Radio would play songs that weren't singles like Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder. It only charted on the adult contemporary chart in Billboard, but it did chart. Some of the songs on the AOR chart was also album tracks.

Saturday night fever had 6. The 3 Bee Gees hits, the two songs they wrote for others (if I can’t have you and more than a woman), plus Boogie Shoes by KC and the Sunshine Band. The last song was previously released on an album, but wasn’t a single until SNF.

But artists announce singles right? Those are the singles. Doesnt matter of radio plays album cuts, its not a single.

Since when? Stairway To Heaven was never a single, yet it's probably Led Zeppelin's most popular song. There's many songs that was a single to buy but got no radio play, so didn't chart. What if a song is only released as a 12" maxi single like Rapper's Delight, but not as a 45. The Hot 100 generally didn't track maxi singles but Rapper's Delight was so popular it made the Top 30. There was a separate dance chart for maxis. On Beatles 45 both the A & B side of a 45 often made the chart because of airplay. Billboard had no idea if people bought a 45 because of the A or B side of singles by The Beatles, so couldn't go from sales only. Some songs the DJ played the B side instead of the A side. That's how Kung Fu Fighting became a hit. Also different countries sometimes released different songs from the same album. Liberian Girl by Michael Jackson was not released as a single in the US, but it was in some other countries. Randy Scouse Git by The Monkees wasn't a single in the US either, but got released in the UK as Alternate Title, because apparently the original title was offensive for the BBC.

The Four Tops should get honorable mention as in successfully scoring 5 U.S. Top 40 hits off a single album in during the 1960s with their classic release REACH OUT. Usually, an album from that era would either score anywhere from two to three single releases, but they successfully broke ground with such an early and unheard defeat.

Reach Out (I'll Be There)
U.S. Billboard Hot 100: #1; R&B: #1

Standing In The Shadows Of Love
U.S. Billboard Hot 100: #6; R&B: #2

Bernadette
U.S. Billboard Hot 100: #4; R&B: #3

7-Rooms Of Gloom
U.S. Billboard Hot 100: #14; R&B: #10

Walk Away Renee
U.S. Billboard Hot 100: #14; R&B: #15

Unless I missed it, and if so, I stand to be corrected, but shouldn't SWV and the album IT'S ABOUT TIME be featured on this list? The group did successfully score 5 U.S. top 40 hits off that album.

Capitol released MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This as a 12inch only. The result was it peaked at #8 on the back of heavy airplay, but could've become the first rap song to hit #1 on Hot100 if released as a regular single. On the other side, it drove album sales to a point where Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em had one of the best chart run in Billboard 200 history, 50+ weeks in top 10, including 21 at #1.

Maybe less so by this time, but most very early rap songs were 12" only. The songs were generally too long to fit on a 7" 45. Most hip hop acts then didn't have albums either, singles only.
