Don't fall for that. With so many broken promises, I'm over C.K. releasing a new album. I'm much more interested in the material sitting in the vaults at Warner Brothers. I've always heard those songs are incredible. [Edited 6/15/18 20:47pm] "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

kitbradley said: Much better than "I Love Myself" and "It's Not Over" but still not classic Chaka. The press is reporting "Like Sugar" is Chaka's first new song in over a decade. Just pretend those didn't happen. Erase, erase, erase.

I don't know....but I know that she plays drums

I'm diggin it! Classic CHAKA for me. It too gives me that throwback RUFUS vibe. I look forward in hearing as to what this upcoming album will offer.

Not too sure if the producer of this track settled for bad vocal takes (the double tracking really doesn't work either) or they went overboard with processing but the vocals sound awful.

I loves the vocals. Bodybodybodybody. Sure its not Ave Maria but its a funky stomper that makes me shake in all the right places. . I was thinking about MJ Cole's remix of De La Soul's "All Good" over the weekend which featured Chaka on vocals, this is a fun update/companion. if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

I concur. I don't see Chaka agreeing to include this song on her (alledged) album. She is so much better than this mediocre club song. Sorry. I'm the ultimate Chakaholic and I listened to the track multiple times trying to make myself like it. And the fact that I had to do that just proves that this track isn't befitting to a legend/icon of her caliber. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

. I'll admit seeing Chaka on Bandaroo Jamboree festival lineups recently I thought she'd release some sort of folk album, not a funk tune, but some of yall are so hard to please.

I think the song works as a fun, summer dance track but....I just hope that the album (if it really gets released, lol) has more traditional R&B/funk sounds.I wouldn’t want an entire album of dance/club sounds.Chaka is more versatile than that.

First Listen: Chaka Khan is back with "Sugar"(June 15, 2018) We never hesitate to jump for joy when we hear something new from the legendary Chaka Khan. It has been a decade since she last graced us with the album, Funk This, and she has been releasing new music constantly over the past few years. Well today, the divine Ms. K released a brand new single that is the preface to an album coming later this year. “Like Sugar” is a funky, beat-filled number that has Chaka moving through her upper register and working it beautifully. The song is a great sound for her, and now we can’t wait for more. Check out “Like Sugar” and welcome back Chaka Khan!

the video is OK,but it’s a shame that Chaka doesn’t appear in it

It will adequately serve its purpose. They could've had a graffiti artist paint a big mural of Chaka. That would've been cool in her absence. The biggest surprise for me is there was no advanced notice or the usual announcement followed by a lengthy delay or altogether cancellation. Bravo for that! I'd rather have new stuff sprung on me like this. Let's hope this will be the trend onward. [Edited 6/26/18 9:59am]

It's pointless not having her in the video. She still looks great. And let's face it, this track is basically The Fatback Band's "Bus Stop".

I was just thinking...this video is sort of a "sequel" to Chaka's 1984 "I Feel For You" video lots of young people doing the latest moves, just like in the previous video.Wish she was in this new one, though.

None of this felt right from the jump. And it all makes sense now. "Like Sugar" isn't a song. It's a lifted beat with no writing credit given to the original and one verse that took 3 people to write? I'd expect this from a European DJ (yeah I said it!) or one of these youngins but not from Chaka. Not from the woman who has been giving me life since 1979. Not as her return to the majors. And that tired 30-second Gap ad they extended to 4 minutes; trying to convince me I'm gettin' some "I Feel For You" freshness. More corporate bullshit. I'll take another independently released "It's Not Over" or "I Love Myself" over this any day. This mess...and that Nile Rodgers project masquerading as CHIC...

It's clear to me that the producer was given something like a 1 minute acapella that's probably been knocking around for a while.

That's why it was really hard for me to believe this song would have a place on any alleged upcoming Chaka Khan album. it's just not her style in any way, shape or form. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

. You better get Ed Sheeran's lawyer on the phone because this is how shenanigans works in 2018. Sure the bassline is possibly similar but was it "lifted"? . Also, "Like Sugar" is the first release from Diary Records, which is Switch's imprint. . Reports clearly state that Chaka's album will be released on Diary Records. if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Diary Records in conjunction with Island Records under licence to Universal Music. I assume that means Island/Universal will be handling distribution, marketing, promotion, greasing palms, etc...
Sounds lifted to me...or at least inspired by. And even if it wasn't, giving the illusion or impression of being so is enough to convince a jury if it's taken that far. [Edited 6/27/18 11:42am]
