Hard to believe this "Compton" rapper is authentic when he lands guest stars like U2 and Rihanna (international pop acts). |

I understand, but isn't that why they sought him to begin with? Because he is authentic? |

Authenticity comes from the soul, not what other artists you ask to guest on a song. Take away the beats and the show, and rap is urban poetry; a poetry that has often gone unread and unappreciated. I'm not sure why Compton is in quotes. Are you doubting where he was born and raised?
To others, yeah Jay Z or Public Enemy should have been contenders for the Pulitzer before Kendrick. The fact that it happened at all is amazing in itself.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

Compton didn't have cred without N.W.A. who released music during Kendrick's birth. Kendrick ended up on the set of the music video for "California Love" when he wasn't even 10 years old, so something tells me he doesn't represent the way this article is titled.

But who cares what an article says? The dude won a fucking Pulitzer prize. Are we going to discredit the Pulitzer next? If Prince won it, everyone would have a lifelong love affair with the Prize. But it's Kendrick Lamar and suddenly he's not this or that? If folks don't like his music, cool. But why try to piss on someone else's parade? It seems petty. I'm not a KL fan by any means, but fuck - let the dude have his moment.

Awards are no indicator of status or impact. There are many legendary artists that have never won a Grammy and that are not even in the RHOF. Kendrick is one of the better commercial rappers out now but he doesn't deserve an award of this magnitude not even Jay Z (who is grossly overrated)
LL Cool J, NWA, Public Enemy, and Run DMC are the true pionners of Hip Hop (NWA finally getting their just due these last few years). Tupac and Biggie were the first real cross over rappers that opened the doors for the likes of Jay Z, Eminem, etc. They just give out awards to anybody now and not to the people that really transformed and transcend music. |

No, Kendrick did not win Album of the Year at the recent Grammys...Classical & Jazz Artists have won Pulitzers for decades...It's time to branch out into different Genres.. |

Have to disagree on LL Cool J. just because he was there doing shitty raps during that time doesn't make him a pioneer in the leagues of Rakim, Public Enemy and Run DMC.
I don't where you were in the late 80's and 90's but NWA always got their dues, that's not somthing of the last few years. Tupac and especially Biggie were overrated but commercially enjoyable. |

So authentic that he made a song with Taylor Swift. He's talented with words but he sold out a long time ago if we're speaking about authenticity. |

Great honor for Hip Hop in general and King Kendrick in particular. My only beef is that I feel that this award should've gone to TPAB instead of Damn. but I'm happy nonetheless. |

I think this is closer to how I feel. All these old institutions keep co-opting him.

Okay that is fine but you gotta bring more of an argument than just "shitty" raps. LL Cool J was one of the first cross over Hip Hop stars that made dance/Hip Hop club music very popular in the 80s. He opened the doors for people like Biggie, Jay Z, Drake, etc and others that make the same type of Dance/Rap music into the mainstream. Back in the late 80's, it was mostly Rock, R&b and Pop not Hip Hop on the radio. He most definitly was a pioneer and deserves to be listed. His music was not conscious rap music but it was still light hearted good fun Hip Hop music to dance too. I also appreciate he did not use a whole lot of profanity in his Hip Hop music which appears to be a criterion if you make a rap song nowadays. Lastly,
he has a ton of classics and great songs. Also, LL had a longer commercial run than Jay Z (1985- 2005) compared to (1996 - 2011). I think it was impressive he still had hits and club bangers in the 21st century after his debut. That is nothing to sneeze at
LL is very underrated. I love Rakim too and I do think he is a legend but I think LL is underrated in terms of his commercial and cross over success as well as his overall impact on Hip Hop. |

I agree 100%. I liked Kendrick's first album and I felt he did have potential to be greater than that....but he is overrated now.
He hasn't made more of an impact on Hip Hop than Run DMC, LL, NWA Tupac, Nas etc.
Why not give it to NWA or Tupac? They were recent Rap acts inducted in the RHOF (not that the RHOF means anything) but I would have selected a Rapper or Rap act that has actually made a impact on Hip Hop not a current relevant rapper.
They give these awards to anybody nowadays. They have no meaning or merit anymore like they once did.

K Dot has yet to top GKMC IMO. TPAB was hard to listen to and while I purchased DAMN, I've never worked up the motivation to actually listen to it based on the little I've heard. |

Why would they though?
It's not the Oscars or the Grammies.
There's no tv show or viewers attatched.
