janet. 25 years #JANET25

It's been 25 years since Janet Jackson released janet., one of her best two albums (in my opinion). A movie with a common song, and a massive tour were also part of the package for 1993/1994. Janet also suffered great depression during this time, battling with self-image issues.

I don't remember much of this period of her career. However, I have seen many photos and videos of her from this period. It's a shame that she dealt with self-image issues during this period because I feel that she was exquisitely beautiful (physically speaking) at this point in her life and career. I LOVE the below photo of her.

It really is an interesting study on self-image. I think it was some of her most beautiful moments. There was a softness and strong sense of love on janet. You can feel it and hear it. But even she told Robin Roberts in about 2011 that she felt like her smile was like The Joker's. There is a photo in her book, True You, from this era. She has a hospital bracelet on, having been released hours or days earlier, and was on her way to an award show. It was some of her darker moments of abuse from her past, and self-esteem. She certainly learned to let out those demons and kicked their ass with The Velvet Rope and beyond.

If you like Janet at all, I'd encourage anyone to delve back into that period. Watch the videos, interviews, listen to the record. There is an ongoing thread throughout everything.

I always viewed Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, and janet. as a trilogy of her life. Finding her power, using it for good, then just being in love. TVR feels like a new start on things, a more open and honest Janet. But yeah, the janet. seems to go on for a couple of years between the album, Poetic Justice, and the tour.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

TP, thanks for your great analysis. I listened to Janet. for the first time today from start to finish; it’s a really good album. TVR is the first CD that I ever bought. I was 12; it was 1998. I was obsessed with Together Again. TVR is a very mature album and she explored a variety of themes within it. I was oblivious to some of those themes at age 12, which was fine. With each of her albums from Control to TVR, she did a fabulous job of giving each album a theme.
