I think he's very talented. He has perfect pitch and finally got into singing. He has said he wanted Voicenotes to be an homage to the Jam & Lewis 90's R&B production sound. It doesn't hurt when you have Boyz II Men on your record either.
I love "How Long" and "Attention". He's so fucking musical and his intuition about how music works and notes and chords and runs and progressions is just amazing for someone younger. He's confident in himself and knows how to write a catchy song, and produce it to sound different than so much that is on radio today.
He said his first album was him trying to figure out his sound. Voicenotes is him finding it. He really loves the Mpls sound, especially Flyte Tyme production, and he's laid into that in a fresh and current way with his album. He has a great YouTube & internet following so I'm not surprised it went gold so quickly.
I've listened to most of the album, and didn't find a song I wanted to skip past yet. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |
