RBRM, group drama continues So Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill did a slick business move and trademarked the name New Edition and thus prohibit others from using it therefore cauing the Summer tour to be history with all six members and the cast of the biopic. So now we have Ronni, Bobby, Rick and Mike = RBRM and they are doing a full tour in September. They also have dates in Atlanta and Detroit before the full tour kicks off. Meanwhile Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill are perfoming in Philadelphia in August. According to Michael Bivens, who was instrumental in forming the New Edition with Ricky Bell and Bobby Brown in 1978, there were effortys made to get Messrs. Tresvant and Gill to agree to all co-owning the name, but they didn't budge. IMHO opinion it seems odd that the last two peopl to join the group would sneak and own the name. Tresvant was originally opposed to Gill joining the group. This sounds similar to the issues with Shalamar (named owned by Jody Watley); Lakeside (named owned by Mark Woods) and Xscape (at least all four own that name, and when Kandi is not involved they have to use Xscap3, by tje way Kandi is back for dates in Kansas City, Oklahoma City and New Orleans). Ronnie was the last to join before Johnny Gill was recruited. If Brooke Payne hadn't accepted to be NE's manager, Ronnie probably wouldn't be in the group at all, since he is Brooke's nephew and wasn't from the same neighborhood as the other 4 guys. Here's a photo of the group before Ronnie. The member on the right is Travis Pettus. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The trademark registration happened in 2013. They've all worked together since then. Something else must be afoot.

Ralph is currently recording a solo album, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Ralph has a radio show and announced a few months ago about recording and hasn't been on the show much at all in the last few weeks to work exclusively on the music. Before he left, Ralph played rough mixes of a few songs he was doing. He hasn't really said anything much about NE lately though. Last year he did say NE was planning to start touring around November or December 2017. Then when that time came Ralph said on the show, they would tour in the spring as they decided it wasn't a good idea financially to do it around Christmas when people were spending their money on presents. What happened after that, don't know. It's been rumored that they want the movie cast to tour with them. But they're mostly actors and I don't see how they would have time to do a tour or what they would be doing onstage. A few of them are professional singers either as recording artists or Broadway stage singers. 2 of the actors who played the young version of the group has been in the Lion King musical before doing the NE biopic. Ricky has also released a single recently with his wife, to raise money for a charity. There's 2 music videos, the original version and a Latin pop style dance remix. Nothing's afoot! It's the media that's trying to get all the NE fans upset for absolutely nothing. Ralph is working on his solo album and will tour for it, Johnny is trying to wrap promoting the Game Changer album and (as you already know) Ronnie, Ricky Mike (BBD) and Bobby will it the road this September. As for the NE Story cast:
Caleb McLaughlin (Ricky), Dante Hoagland (Biv), Keith Powers (Ronnie), Luke James (Johnny) and Bryshere (Yazz) Grey (Biv) are all on hit shows now:
Stranger Things The Last O.G. Famous In Love Star Empire
Algee Smith and Jahi Di'Allo Winston (Ralph) have been doing movies and music
Woody McClain and Tyler Williams (Bobby) is getting to promote the upcoming miniseries, "The Bobby Brown Story"
Not sure what Elijah Kelley (Ricky) and Miles Truitt (Ronnie) are up to though.

DANG BLASTED MEDIA!!! | |

whatever the situation is,it's absurd that the group must tour this summer without their two lead singers. There is still alot of hype from the successful TV series last year.Too bad they can't work out their issues and take advantage of that hype and give the fans what they truly deserve: a "real" reunion tour.

I find it strange that some on here blame the media, lol it Michael Bivens' interview and Ricky Bell's Instagram post that tipped the public off to their being a problem. Media can't make something out of nothing if there weren't some form of leakers somewhere. The problem appears to be that Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill aren't willing to relinquish their 50/50 of the name and allow Messrs. Bivens, Bell, Brown and DeVoe in the ownership of the name. Ralph was on the radio today where listeners called in to wish him a happy birthday. He said something about working with his family. I know his daughter sings, but don't know if that's who he was talking about. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Poor Ralph.
Nobody wants to hear his solo music, not in 1987, barely in 1990 and 1994 compared to the success of his bandmates, and most certainly not in 2018. As a frontman, he’s like Larry Blackmon and Morris Day in that he is just not a solo type of guy and works better in the context of his group. And I can see how he would be frustrated by that and take the action he has taken in legally controlling the NE name. I really do.

That is so true He needs to put his ego aside, reunite with the other guys, and do the damn reunion tour. Why make it so hard?

come to think of it....they could just do a Bell Biv DeVoe and Bobby Brown tour....instead of giving fans only a partial New Edition tour.

Ralph is on the radio show today for the 1st time in awhile. I'm not sure, but from what he said his record might come out on Johnny's label or that Johnny has contacts that will help him. Ralph didn't say exactly, just clues from what he said. The recent NE song, This One's For Me And You, was on Johnny's last album. It became a hit on the adult R&B chart in Billboard. A little while back it was announced that Ralph & Johnny are going to do a concert with Keith Sweat sometime this year. This was before the RBRM thing. Johnny's been doing concerts for awhile now, some with Charlie Wilson & Fantasia.
