I dig how she always puts what inspires each song in the liner notes... The 1 4 Pynk talks about Prince in SOTT movie doing Hot Thing... Got a brotha all emotional again... I knew I loved this song 4 a reason music touched...

she shouldn't have cut the spoken part on Pynk in the album version. I love it.

Mixed thoughts on this album, certainly her worst to date in my opinion. There's some songs I really think are great, like 'Dirty Computer', 'Don't Judge Me', 'So Afraid', and the dream interludes, then there's a few which are enjoyable such as, 'Make Me Feel' and 'I Like That'. The rest ranges from okay to terrible, the worst offenders being 'I Got the Juice' and 'Django Jane'.

I appreaciate the sentiment of the album, and the Prince influences (though in the case of 'Americans' it's a little too on the nose), but as a whole I think it suffers from trying too hard to fit into the current mainstream musical climate. At its best, the album reminds me of St. Vincent's Masseduction or even a little of Susanne Sundfor's Ten Love Songs. I guess it's not a bad album for the sort of music she's trying to create, but it's not the direction I'd like to see her taking.

And I keep saying hate for 'Make the Bus' from The ArchAndroid. I've always loved that song!

[Edited 4/27/18 8:30am]

I would like to see Pharell staying far away from Janelle's music because his rap was the weakest part but the song is nice and I wasn't expecting that, I was expecting some tired stuff like happy. I think Django Jane is fire. She's spitting good rhymes.

Make the bus is the only track on that album that I always skip, it doesn't fit in.

Make the Bus has grown on me... I used 2 skip it 2, even left it off her album playlist... After revisiting the album recently, I decided not 2 skip it 1 time n it's cute... Not my favorite, but cute... The Archandroid is a classic, this new 1 is also dope, on my 2nd complete listen... Gonna revisit The Electric Lady sometime soon, I hate my indifference to it... music

I've watched the film first. It's quite a cool little picture. It reminds me of the Three Chains O Gold movies that Prince used to make. The dystopian ideas are quite interesting. The videos are so cool.

Will have to go off and have a listen to the album now.

I think Electric lady is my least favorite Janelle's project, it's not like it's bad, not at all but it lacks something compared to her other projects. It was like she wasn't taking huge risks on that album and she usually doesn't do that.

Stevie may have had the flu when he recorded his. He visited my church a few months ago and couldn't sing because of it.

ditto on "Make The Bus", I really can't stand Of Montreal's vocalist lol I have friends who are superfans of that band and swear they have great music, and I don't doubt it, but his singing has turned me off from ever wanting to hear it.

The album covers a different style musically than the Archandroid but she was playing a little safe for her standards on that compared to Archandroid or this new album imo.

Appologies if this has already been asked and answered, but, has there been any confirmation (perhaps in the liner notes) of Prince's involvement in any of the tracks?

She didn't specify how exactly he contributed to the sound, but it's speculated he played the synthesiser on Make Me Feel (and wasn't credited).

So, officially, all we have is the following quote?

"Prince was actually working on the album with me before he passed on to another frequency, and helped me come up with some sounds."

With all the credit details available, I find the lack of specifics regarding Prince's involvement annoying... Oh, well. It's just like when he was alive I guess. sigh

She said somewhere but I don't remember where he sent a lot of material to her to give her inspiration after she told him what kind of sounds she wanted for this album. She mentioned the name of some artists he suggested but I don't remember them.

Identity

Excerpts of her remarks from the new Rolling Stone interview:

Rumors spread that Prince co-wrote the single "Make Me Feel," which features a "Kiss"-like guitar riff. "Prince did not write that song," says Monáe, who sorely missed his advice during the production process. "It was very difficult writing this album without him."

Prince was the first person to get a physical copy of
The ArchAndroid – she presented the CD to him with a flower and the titles written out by hand. "As we were writing songs, I was like, ‘What would Prince think?' And I could not call him. It's a difficult thing to lose your mentor in the middle of a journey they had been a part of."

Enough SOTT comparisons. "Pynk" melody sounds like "Only You" by Yazoo.
