New UMO! Perhaps reminiscent of W&L in the use of chords? Your post just alerted me to this, and I've got to get tix for the coming tour--I like Ruban Nielsen's styles.

In the use of chords, harmony and overall sound this song definitly is influenced by W&L

This album was recommended yesterday as part of Paste Magazine's emailer article, "The 15 Albums We're Most Excited About in April". And I was thinking, "Where have I seen that name, Unknown Mortal Orchestra before?" It was here on the org!

Heh--he (Ruban) also does a cover of Shakedown Street that sounds a lot like Prince.

Don't forget their 2011, erm, hit (?) "Ffunny Ffrends" that sampled the Pointer Sisters' "Yes We Can-Can" drums.

Nah. I don't hear it. BUT - They had a track on their last album called "Acid Rain" that sounds like it could've been on The Dream Factory.

Boy I just live for shit like this. Mysterious. nice.

a friend of mine has played some shows with them before and i remember him saying they were inspired by P on that record, but I could be misremembering, as it was a few years ago. great stuff anyway, they're way too overlooked. here's a cut from that absolutely brilliant record.

They probably copied the drum pattern, not sampled it because that's not the type of band that they are. They play live. Ruban N. engineers his own analog synths, etc.

Uh, no. I even know the site it sounds like they downloaded it from. And the album it is from has more drum loops.

OK. I must say that I've not listened to those earlier albums in great detail.My attention begins mainly with their album II.

Yeah the first one has straight up drum loops, but I agree some sound replayed! "Bicycle" sounds like Monkees "Mary Mary" drums, but it isn't, or it is layered with real playing. "Jello And Jaugernauts" sounds like Gladys Knight "Who Is She (And What Is She To You)". I just know because I spent hours with the same few seconds of drum breaks as a beat programmer.
