Billboard's Bill Werde: Beyonce has surpassed Michael Jackson 'Also, while I'm on controversial topics: I think Beyonce has pretty clearly reached or even arguably exceeded Michael Jackson levels of clout & relevancy. I lived through & worshipped Jackson--had the jacket with the zippers & moonwalked in my bedroom for years. But consider...' * * "Michael's solo peak lasted from around 1979 to maybe mid-92 when "Remember the Time" started to fade. Please don't make a case for his last no 1, "You Are Not Alone." By then, accusations were swirling. So that's 12+ years. Beyonce is at 14+ and only getting stronger." * https://ohnotheydidnt.liv...48098.html * * He makes more of his argument in a series of tweets in the above link. * * Any thoughts?

I think its demonstrably not true mostly because fame now and then are quite incomparable things. Beyonce is the biggest (arguably) star in a world of never ending access to entertainment, Michael Jackson was the biggest (I'd say inarguably) in a world of limited entertainment, in a world where it was very possible, quite normal in fact, to be very, very bored. So she can't surpass someone that was competing in a quite different game.

Based on the writers criteria of ‘clout and relevancy’ he might well have a case but in terms of musical quality it’s just not even remotely close and I genuinely don’t think that’s a matter of personal taste so much as a basic statement of fact. I watched her Coachella set and while as a performance it was near flawless, some of the music was just terrible. There was what felt like a half hour section where she was just sing/rapping meme or tweetable lyrics (Becky with the good hair etc) over soulless trap beats, which incredible sounded even worse backed by a marching band! It’s live MUSIC at the end of the day, I think a lot of people seem to be letting themselves be fooled into thinking what they’re seeing is more important than what they’re hearing!

Well, this is her time to be a popular icon apparently but the day will come when her time will pass, too... And someone younger will take the spotlight. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

As I stated before, Beyonce has ZERO competition so yeah, she is huge. Not because of talent, though. You can't name a single African-American female vocalist in 2018 that has even had a small fraction of the cross-over promotion and press time she has received. All of the other African-American female singers who actively record have been relegated to black radio formats and receive little to no mainstream press. However, when I turn on the radio, doesn’t matter if it’s an R&B or Pop format, Michael Jackson is played probably every hour…. But, anyone who claims Beyoncé has had the same impact of Michael Jackson needs to have their heads and ears examined.”

His solo peak went right until the end of '97, despite the allegations. And maybe even extended until 2002, when he sold around 10 million albums of Invicible. How much does Beyonce sell per album? And how about that 1 mio. of concert tickets sold in'09 in London? Seriously this Beyonce hype is anmoying. Especially in Europe, where she's not all that much of a star. I can't remember ever hearing a song of her on radio. [Edited 4/18/18 14:04pm]

Beyonce is a good performer onstage, but most of her songs are terrible. There's no melody in most of her songs. All these years later,"Billie Jean" still sounds fantastic when you hear it on the radio.30 years from now,are people gonna say the same about Beyonce's "7/11" or "Girls (Run The World)"?

I am going to say this one thing and I am done with this "topic". Its stupid and ridiculous and I find it downright disrespectful to Michael's incomparable legacy. Beyonce is overrated and overhyped as it is BUT now they are trying to say she has "surpassed" Michael? Michael mother fucking Jackson? This is the biggest crock of BULLSHIT I have ever heard.
If some people prefer Beyonce over Michael that is one thing...... BUT his impact and what he did, accomplishments, universal fame and appeal, album sells/hits and contribution to music and entertainment is NOT up for debate. Michael is the standard and no one has surpassed what he did and no one ever will.
Second, the writer is a fool.
How could Beyonce surpass a man who has sold OVER a Billion records World wide and has the biggest selling album of all time? Not only is Michael amongst the biggest seller in America but he is ALSO the biggest seller in MULTIPLE countries....Beyonce is not. Beyonce is not even amongst the best selling artists in America having only sold 30 units ww let alone other countries (many don't even know who she is)
The writer must be smoking crack or is flat out delusional.
None of Beyonce's tours have surpassed Michael and Michael has a concert attendance record that has yet to be broken and another record he broke at the age of 50 years old.
Michael has 13 number 1's Beyonce has only 5.
The Writer tried to diminish YANA as being a number one hit. Michael was almost 40 when he got that number one. Beyonce's last number one was when she was 27 (10 fucking years ago). People lie but these numbers don't. Michael inarguably had a longer commercial peak than her (this is not up for debate its based on FACTS)
The fact that the man sold out 1 million tickets in just ONE city shows that nobody was in his league of stardom and global impact. Beyonce cannot do that and never will!
Michael sold out 1 million tickets is just ONE city, ONE city at 50 years old in just 4 hours. Beyonce hasn't even headlined an arena let alone a stadium in countries that Michael headlined multiple stadiums in.
Michael also has more Top 10 hits than her (domestically and internationally)
Michael is in the Top 10 of Billboards greatest music artists of all time. Beyonce is ALL the way down the list and she has not made more of impact or contribution to music than Michael nor does she have his fame or world wide universal appeal.
NOR is she more talented or charismatic than Michael as a performer. He could entertain a crowd by himself (i.e. Motown 25) and blew the roof off. Beyonce cannot do that by herself on stage and needs a whole production squad because she is mediocre and her music sucks.
Michael Jackson is still the most famous person in the world. Beyonce has not surpassed Michael's fame and reach (and he did it without the help of social media which Beyonce largely relies on for relevancy).
Not only that, Beyonce is not fucking with Michael's catalog of classics or music videos. Her catalog is mediocre and her music does not connect or reasonate with people like Michael's did.
For Beyonce to have surpass Michael, she would have had to innovate something and made some unique contribution to music and entertainment that had never been done before.....she has not and she continues to follow the blue print that artists such as Michael did before her.
Before she can surpass Michael, she has to first suprass her peers (Britney Spears, Usher, Adele) who ALL have Diamond albums and she has not. Then, she has to surpass Madonna, Prince, Tina Turner and Janet. She doesn't even have that. Michael has TWO Diamond albums.
Michael was MAGIC. I was not even born when Michael reign Supreme in Pop and even I know the man was magic and was blessed with God given talent. I know because his gift touched me and MY life and although I was not born when he was at his height, I am thankful to have been alive in the world when he was in it.
We will NEVER see a human being OR artist of that calibar ever again. He touched people and he connected with people ALL over the world in a special way that no other artist has or ever will again. Beyonce does not and NEVER will.
I have said this before and I will say it again, there is an industry agenda and media propagada to make Beyonce as "the greatest star that ever exist".... Why? I don't know. It is getting borderline creepy at this point though. Beyonce doesn't have the talent, appeal or receipts to back this "hype" up. When you look at her album sells and what she has accomplished it does not reflect this sentiment.
Beyonce is the most overrated pop star, EVER.
Fuck this debate (there is not a debate, Michael is the greatest of all time) and fuq all the posters who continue to post this bullshit on prince.org
