Among all the reissues and remasters in multiple formats some albums get, which one have you purchased the most? Purple Rain?

Probably Teena's "It Must Be Magic". Twice on vinyl, three times on CD. Motown originally issued it on CD as a twofer with "Irons In the Fire". A second pressing by itself and the third and final pressing in a remastered, expanded form (which I was truly underwhelmed by).

It's 3 times each for Diana (Diana Ross), The Visitors (ABBA) Time and Tide and The Sweetest Illusion (Basia). For the Diana album, vinyl, cd and expanded version (cd). For both Time and Tide and The Sweetest Illusion, cassette, cd, remastered/expanded version (cd). For The Visitors, cassette, cd and remastered/expanded version.

You reminded me that I bought all of ABBA's studio albums three times. First collectively in the 2008 CD box set The Albums, then the individual deluxe double disc remasters and then collectively again in the The Studio Albums 2014 vinyl box set.

The Jacksons - Victory (4: cassette, picture disc, regular LP, CD)

Michael Jackson - Bad (4: bought the record twice, and 2 CDs, one is the 2001 version with the Quincy Jones interviews. The record version does not have Leave Me Alone. Technically there might be a 5th, if you count that I bought all of the 12" singles from this album released in the US, including Todo Mi Amor. )

Terence Trent D'Arby - Symphony Or Damn (3: CDs. 1 was a Japan version with no extra tracks)

Michael Jackson - Dangerous (3 CDs: the original, 1 with a pop up cover, and the 2001 version)

Stevie Wonder - Hotter Than July (3: cassette, 2 CDs)

Johnnie Taylor - Wall To Wall (3: cassette, record, CD. I only bought the CD, the other 2 were given to me)

The Gap Band - Gap Band IV (3: cassette, record, CD. The LP was given to me)

DeBarge - In A Special Way (3: 2 records, 1 CD)

The O'Jays - So Full Of Love (3: 8-track, CD, LP. I didn't buy the tape)

Michael Jackson- Bad (cassette, CD, 2001 remaster, original vinyl with all original versions (subsequent unmarked pressings had alterations to many of the tracks), Bad 25 w/ DVD; I also bought the 7" pressing reissue for "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" with the spoken intro).

Prince and the Revolution - Purple Rain (cassette, original vinyl, purple vinyl, CD, CD digipak, CD deluxe reissue, vinyl reissue, picture disk reissue, Beta, VHS, CED, BluRay, HD-DVD, regular DVD, 20th anniversary DVD).

- Emancipation (at least 4 times, two or three to make mounted CDs in a picture frame for friends)
- The Beautiful Experience (see Emancipation)

Most Prince albums I have on CD & LP most likely, and had a cassette version through about 1989 or so.

Probably some multiples of George Michael stuff, too.

I've never heard of an audio only videocassette album, other than a self-recorded one. I've seen DVD & Blu-Ray audio albums. I have DVD audio discs of the Peter Gabriel era Genesis albums that came in a box set with the regular CDs. The DVDs have 5.1 mixes which are useless to me since I have a stereo setup. I don't really know what 5.1 is anyway. Here's a Blu-Ray version of a Stevie Wonder album.

Yes it is since that is what the thread asked about. If you're talking about something else like a concert video or a movie, then it isn't an album. The Making Of Thriller is not an album. So it does not count. An album is audio, so a DVD audio disc would qualify, a music video compilation on DVD does not.

I actually did mean audio releases only. How many times you bought a movie is a different thread in a different forum.

I'm thinking London Calling, at least 4 times. But just straight up replacement for scratched/lost cd's rather than new editions, Fiona Apple's Whenthepawn which i've bought 3 times. And i'll buy again if it ever comes out on vinyl.

Now with streaming, CD's are barely even played so I can't imagine there'll be many more i'll buy several times.

as far as different formats, probably the cure - 'concert'

i initially bought it on import vinyl, then import cd, then found a cassette called 'curiosity' which included the full 'concert' album on side 1 and a bunch of live and unreleased tracks on side 2, then again on import vinyl (which is the only copy i still have).

i've bought 'the gold experience' probably about 12 times to sell on ebay...you can always find it at half price books or in the used section at your local record store for $7.99 or so....

Good grief, I can't remember... I got rid of lps and cassettes eons ago...

The Who Live At Leeds

1980 - LP, UK reissue with inserts and poster in brown folder cover

1991 - MCA Standard CD

1998 - MCA Reissued CD remastered with 8 more tracks

1998 - Bootleg "Live Tommy At The Leeds" - The hour long performance of "Tommy" that was excluded on previous releases

1999 - Bootleg "Live At Leeds Complete" the complete 2.5 hour show

1999 - Bootleg "Luke At Leeds" - "remaster" of the above complete show

2015 - 24 bit HD file of the entire concert

And by the way - even after almost 40 year of being obsessed with this album - that 24 bit HD file was totally worth it & is the only version I listen to now.

It is hard to imagine I would ever spring for another copy of it. I have already passed on the Deluxe Edition, Super Deluxe Box Set and a 3-LP set of the entire concert on vinyl. I also have about ten other concerts from this tour in great quality to listen to.

But it is a really good album, I just listened to some of it this weekend.

To answer my own question, there have been many albums I bought four times, Purple Rain, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, We Are the Pipettes, Histoire de Melody Nelson, The Sisters of Mercy's Floodland, Tori Amos' Under the Pink and Boys for Pele, but the only one I purchased more than four times is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band:

1987(?) U.S. CD

2009 U.S. remastered mono CD (as part of The Beatles in Mono box set)

2009 U.S. remastered stereo CD

2014 remastered mono LP

2017 remastered stereo 4CD/Blu-ray/DVD box set

I'd generally say Purple Rain (2 original issue vinyl, 1 CD, reissued 180 vinyl), SOTT (4 different vinyl versions plus CD), but the champ may be LoveSexy (cassette, 3 different vinyl versions and 2 CDs (unsequenced and imported sequenced).

Every vinyl version I've bought of LoveSexy (sealed or used) that I've played on 3 different turntables over 20 years has skipped.

Talking Book is also one; I've bought 3 different copies of vinyl, including the audiophile reissue.

There are other albums I've bought in CD-vinyl-MP3 formats (usually when I've lost the CD but sometimes when the original issue CD is worse than the MP3).

All of these artist’s music I’ve purchased the exact same cd/tape/itunes/etc.… more than twice but most less than four. Side note…. and some…{gasp} on 8 track tapes!

I bought 1999 (1982) on cassette, vinyl and on cd and in the future should a deluxe version ever get released (with Purple Music on it), I'll get that too. Its my fav Prince album of all-time.
