Rick James "Glow" -- references to Prince's PR? . I never really thought about this before, but I was watching Rick James "Glow" video the other day, and realized all the references to Prince's Purple Rain backstage scene....the ruffled shirt and lace gloves, manager yelling at him, his ego & fighting with his girlfriend, etc......A lot of people claim that Rick was insanely jealous of Prince. I know they did not get along on the "Fire it Up" tour, and Rick stole Prince's synthesizer and supposedly recorded "Street Songs" from it. . I always thought they admired one another and both were very strong personalities and very talented, and very competitive. They are both legends. Do you think Rick hated Prince? I know he used to rag on Prince, but I thought it was all in good fun. .

that "Glow" video is unintentionally funny it's an obvious "tribute" (or rip-off?) to Purple Rain....my guess is that Rick was thinking "Let me show him how it should be done",lol

Rock's career should have been better than what it ended up. He wasn't going to be on Prince's level but he should have been alive longer making music and touring. Cocaine really is a hell of a drug.

. Yea, Slick Rick had a good sense of humor. He didn't hold back, LOL "With love, honor, and respect for every living thing in the universe, separation ceases, and we all become one being, singing one song." - Prince Roger Nelson (1958-2016)

. I could not agree with you more! Rick was an incredible artist, but he loved to party too much. He could have done so much more! He was an amazing musician and producer. If I could have anyone produce an album for me, it would be either Prince or Rick James (at the top of my list). Rick knew what "good hooks" were and he was really good at arranging music. It's really a sad loss. "With love, honor, and respect for every living thing in the universe, separation ceases, and we all become one being, singing one song." - Prince Roger Nelson (1958-2016)

I think what people tend to forget about RICK this is someone that did not come out of FUNK he grew into it, he was hanging with Neil Young and those cats so I am interested had Rick lived and aged would he have gone back to a roots type acoustic beginning again. Rick got sucked up by the scene and also ego and women and lifestyle, some cant come back, alot in Prince's circle went that way too. . Rick was in various bands early on. It was until he formed the Stone City Band that he started to have commercial success. His music was a fusion of rock, funk and folk; his style was very unique. Rick was and is still very underrated. I like the Glow album, but he was on a decline from this point. This album should've been a lot better, it has some solid tracks, but overall, underwhelming.
I'm a huge fan of Rick's, and I often wonder how his career would've gone had he not gotten sucked into rock and roll excess. He definitely had the talent to go the long haul, he just couldn't stay clean. I feel that if anyone could've given Prince a run for his money, it was Rick James. Prince just never lost his love or focus for the music, I think Rick put partying above his music and could never get back to his highest heights. . You hit the nail right on the head!! Rick loved his "Mary Janes" more than his music, while Prince love his music more than anything (well, almost). He loved the ladies -- they both did, that's for sure!

For sure. Rick was the man who did it all before Prince himself (singing, writing (for himself and others though his range wasn't as wide as Prince's), producing, playing instruments, implementing strong sexual themes in his music, having a flamboyant persona and if the rumor is true, he even had the idea of having proteges before Prince and if we're to compare those of both artists, Rick's were easily more talented musically) and he's never received due credit. Not just for that but for the music he's made at large. I'll always say Prince owed a large part of his schtick to Rick. [Edited 3/19/18 11:23am]

I just visited the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last month, and they had Rick James' guitar on display.

. That was very nice what you said about Rick. I agree; I don't think the man got enough credit. Sure, he won Grammy's and was recognized for his contributions to music, but he did produce a lot of artist's as well. He produced the Mary Jane Girls, and he always had talented musicians and back-up singers. . I think Rick and Prince always had that competitive side, but I think they respected each other. I think Rick was pissed that Prince stole Denise from him, tho.

I love this impromptu interview Rick did. He talks about his music and his opinion of other young artists. .

Honestly, I think Rick James is turning over in his grave that someone thinks "Glow" was influenced by Purple Rain. LOL
And no.. backstage and ruffles have been around as long as Rock and Roll...or at least since the 60s with Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles...Prince did create a really cool look with them during the PR era though. To All the Haters on the Internet

I remember reading a interview with Shelia in Musicians Exchange when this video came out..She said Rick was a "dog and a theif". She said his new video ("Glow") looked like a bad outtake from "PR" and he was trying look like one of the Revolution members.....Still a great song nonetheless.

I also remember Sheila making similiar comments in a 1985 Black Beat magazine article "Those ruffles were OURS",she said,"And his videos look just like Purple Rain!".

. I was referring to the backstage scene -- it's similar to the scene in PR. You don't see it?

I always get a kick out of this interview with Rick; he's talking about Charlie Murphy and Prince. He starts talking about Prince at 13:00. So funny! .
