Roxanne Shanté hip hop biopic "Roxanne Roxanne" on NETFLIX Hey, Friday March 23, NETFLIX released Roxanne Shante's biopic movie. Who checked it out?
Told the story from being a young school girl winning rap battles for money, to Marley Marl getting her to record "Roxanne's Revenge" in his Queensbridge apartment. Also showed what was going on in her family life that may have inspired her raps.
I enjoyed it thoroughly! I wish it got into the Cold Chillin' years a little further. It ends at about 1987! |

I give it a 7.5 out of 10. It was very good and Nia Long's acting is ON POINT. Her mom lights up the screen when she is on. I liked the film as a whole. I got to know her as a woman and the things she has been through. We got to see her drmatic situations with her mother, her boyfriend Cross and just trying to make ends meet. I feel like she more so wanted to express her human side more than her musical side, which is where the points fell off for me.
They did not really go in depth about the recording processes, even the songs themselves didnt really get much airtime or attention. Roxanne's Revenge was maybe played thirty seconds to a minute as just part of the timetable. I have to admit however it was nice to see the Sparky D battles briefly mentioned as I really didnt know much about that at all. While the film is good and inspiring for young women especially I just wanted more focus on the music...but it is still worth watching! Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records. |

By the way I asked Shan if he liked the film and he said he did and liked his brief potrayal by her side. He said it was a good "story" and said his version would be crazy. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

The funny thing is it didn't say nothing about UTFO's song other than Marley asking her if she heard it.
They used my absolute favourite songs from her Pop Art catalog though: "Roxanne's Revenge", "Runaway", "Def Fresh Crew" featuring Biz Markie (loved whoever played him), and "Pay Back"!

Ok- I'm on it (in my "Doug from House of Cards voice). I just saw that this was out as I happened to be browsing Netflix a few nights ago but was waiting for some good feedback. Thanks. |

Been reading bad reports about this on a hip hop forum that mainly has people like myself who grew up in the 80s/90s. |

Nia Long she really kicked ass in the film & I'll even go further & say this is her best role to date. I've been reading on my twitter feed that the ending is basically a segue to Nas' biopic, if its true, I'm totally on board |

Back then there was even a whole album with Roxanne Shanté battling Sparky D.
It´s a bit rare though.
I think I still have it on cassette somewhere. Roxanne Shanté vs. Sparky D. and the Playgirls " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?" |

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |
