For music junkies; what are your main sources of discovering new music?

Ever since main radio in The Netherlands became too one-sided, back in the day when I suppose when it happened all over the world, I had to find music I liked some place else, as I am not really into pre-packaged music, made to sell to the masses.

So in the years before the internet certain magazines seemed to cater to my needs, often not the regular music mags, but more art-inclined mags, like Andy Warhol's Interview Magazine and skate life style mag Lodown. Both focused on a broad aspect of art, fashion, photography, books and music.

Ever since the internet, I had a few blogs that catered to my needs, but as most of these underground blogs fizzle out after some time, I now find myself being catered by less and less music blogs than ever.

So, what are YOUR main sources for music?

I love their name (MODERN rock) and then when I open their site, they have names like Green Day and Linkin Park. (grin)

But I love they give you your kick! What kind of new names did they lead you to?

Curious, cuz I must admit that, even though some of the names they mention in their header were very influential to me when being a teen n twen, like Nirvana, The Cure, Talking Heads and Depeche Mode, some of the other names make me shudder. (grin)

Music magazines rather frustrate than inspire me because it often happens that I don´t even know ONE artist while skimming through a magazine.

-

My main sources for discovering new artists are my Facebook friends who sometimes post a couple of Youtube or Soundcloud links (mostly my younger friends in their 20s or early 30s....my older friends usually post stuff that´s either very old or too mainstream).

-

Besides Facebook links, I often find inspiration in browsing Youtube videos. For example...I usually start by looking up a video or new song, and then I find tons of recommended links or some folks in the comments section recommend a remix or another song by the same artist, or I discover new genres on Youtube and just watching two or three clips usually leads to discovering more artists from that genre, so sometimes I spend hours listening to new music on Youtube or Soundcloud, and it´s great that I get suggestions based on my preferences or based on what I previously watched.

And I also learn a lot about a genre´s history or what I missed out on in the past months or years.

.

This Music:Non-Prince forum has also helped me many times but the focus here is seldom on newer music...but still.....communication is always very helpful when it comes to finding out about certain music or artists.

The only thing I really dislike when it comes to Facebook, music and friends is discussing org-related or Prince related stuff on Facebook. For various reasons I avoid that and try to keep my org and FB activities separate. If just half of those old orgers took their Prince related discussions back to the org then this place would be a bit livelier again but I´m not complaining.

Same here.My Facebook friends have introduced me to artists that I probably would not have found out about on my own.Just a few weeks ago,a friend posted some videos on my timeline, from a new band called Durand Jones and The Indications.I'm now a big fan.

Yeppers! Same exact thing for me. Facebook gets a bad rep, but for me, it provided so many great insight from FB friends. Of course theOrg has always been the number one foundation for me musically since the black & purple lurking days lol So many interesting orgers I learned from over the years like yourself, Cinnie, Namepeace, DirtyChri$, Vainandy, Stymie and my good friend Harlepolis.

I also discovered great music in souncloud and vimeo.

Thank you, likewise ! wink

I think Facebook is what you make it and what you allow it to be. I see huge differences in Facebookl use from country to country or from culture to culture, good and bad.

I see it as a great tool to hook up with friends and relatives who are not in my vicinity and as a way to get more info on music, politics, cooking, hobbies and culture.

Didn´t know that you´ve been lurking since the black and purple days. I´ve been an org member since day one , although we all of course had to start again when the site got an update. I´m very thankful to Ben for creating this wonderful website (and he´s a very mellow, very cool dude in real life, too).

Say hi to Harlepolis if you´re still in touch with her. I remember that she lived in the Emirates but I don´t know where. I miss her on the org.

This decade I enjoyed BET's 106 & Park and MTV's TRL but both have been cancelled.

i have google music and on the home page of that they're always recommending stuff based on whats in my current "liked" songs and artists.. occasionally I'll click on something that I'll actually like.

Change it one more time..

This site has been a huge factor in finding new music (or discovering older music).

Other music sites like Okayplayer.

Amazon used to have new artist features.

Friends with similar tastes.

Artists who guest on tracks for artists I already listen to.

I'd also include podcasts such as The Music Snobs, they provided a lot of knowledge about new music. Would love to follow podcasts in the same vein as that one if there are any.

Liner notes and artist pages. Connect the dots. If I'm on like p2p I sometimes sample a new artist from someone else with similar interests. I also dig on Amazon Prime free player for new stuff.

Good leads. Used them all, of course, in my own way; back in the day when this forum was not so dated (stylistically and how we use it, new sites just interface way better with my PC/smart phone lifestyle) and sites like Okay Player (still use that) and always check on friend's profiles on FB, where some friends like Cinne are way more active on that front as others, as he is an even bigger Music Junkie than I am.

It's just that my music taste is ecclectic, but very particular. Bierman calls it being a snob (grin) but I've just worked in record stores so long I know what I like. Often it's been more about discovering old music, but this year I've been more active when it comes to searching for new music.

Ever since I fell out of love with Prince's music, who took up a lot of space in my Music Junkie-ness, I've been gravitating to artists like Radiohead and Moderat on one side, and on the other side a deepening of my minimal classical love, with trail blazers like Max Richter and my love for unconventional artists that blend genres in ways like no other people do.

For those last two loves https://www.newsounds.org/ became my new lifeline; it's the only site I check every day as they mix minimal classical with world music and folk and electro in ways no other site I've found does.

Also, http://thequietus.com/reviews and, weirdly enough Pitchfork, as they are on top of most popular things. Mostly stuff I do not like, but in between they have great quirky stuff for me to put my teeth in.

Again, thanks for sharing! If any of you has some quirky music blogs they want to share, I would not mind checking them out!

It depends. Mailing lists for venues here in NYC have gotten me to see shows, and by venues i mean smaller club stuff not MSG and big shows like that. But also some of the artists that i follow tend to get me into other artists. my favorite band a-ha got me into alot of artists i had not heard of but had lots of music out, two that come to mind are Sondre Lerche got into him around 2010, but he has a ton of music out, and also Highasakite, a-ha used their lead singer at one of their gigs and that is how i learned of them. Recently got hip to jazz artist Lindsey Webster, who i had not heard till the venue "The Iridium" had her on their upcoming shows and that was how I learned of her, saw her and then got into her music, and alot of times artists have strong openers too that I get into. I try to get into an artist that is actually going to build a catalog of music. There are so many one wonder bands and artists, and then alot arent even recording full records now because they dont sell so I really dont like collecting a bunch of singles.

Appreciate the shout out. Orgers like Graycap, duccichucka and Daesin have turned me on to new sounds over the years.

Paligap knows a ton of great music old and new as well.

Haven't seen old friends stymie and Harlepolis around much lately . . .

Paligap & theAudience are definitely honorable mentions. Stymie still posts on FB & haven’t heard from Aisha (Harlepolis) in years.

My main source of discovering new music is primarily these days the Rough Trade record store website. I look through their new releases each week and see if any album description or cover catches my eye.

The new Sunflower Bean album, Twentytwo in Blue is excellent--very 70s Fleetwood Mac.
