Prince & MJ vocals

We all know Prince is the better musician but is he a better singer?
Liking someone’s singing voice is subjective but not who has the greater vocal ability.

I prefer Whitney’s voice but Mariah is a technically superior singer, not by much.

When it comes to MJ and Prince there’s not much about their voice but I notice a difference between what the internet vs the industry say about their voices.

On the internet, you’ll see people say Orince especially in rock boards.

As far as the industry I hear more people praise MJs voice than Princes. I’m not saying Prince isn’t a good singer but most of what the internet praises him for is looked down upon. Same with Freddie Mercury.

In the case of Prince I feel like he became a much better vocalist as time progressed. In the beginning there was nothing special about his voice, especially not compared to MJ during that same time frame.

What I think hurt MJ is that he experienced vocal issues in the 90s and pretty much stopped singing live. I think he was still capable but he wasn’t going to sound like he did in from the 60s-80s.

Prince had more range on scale but MJ had more range & versatility in his chest voice.

They both had great musicianship and mastered themselves vocally.

I wouldn’t say MJ blows Prince outta the water butbhe is objectively the better and even more influential singer.

It doesn’t have to get that way as long as everyone remain respectful.
I’m sure most people here prefer Princes voice. This isn’t about preference but ability.

No MJ could still bring it he just stopped singing live like he used to. He wasn’t at 100 for his tribute show and he didn’t sound bad either

Musicianship isn’t just about playing an instrument. When it comes to knowing their vocal instrument. Maybe you should learn more about vocals. Any great singer will tell you that every voice is similar to an instrument

Like it was two seperate things. So I misunderstood that U werent refering to musical instruments.

BTW, I know more about vocals than U can ever imagine and can probably sing U under the table. But you're right vocals are like an instrument.

We can be who we want on the internet...

Well if you know so much about singing you should’ve understood what I was saying. You could’ve even asked for clarification. Instead you ASSumed.
This thread is about vocals, why would I be talking about musicality in regards to instruments?

I would say, MJ has a very soulfull voice, which i love.

He doesn't have the power that Prince has.

Prince can sream and go very low.

Technically speaking i would say Prince has a better voice, to me his lower voice is amazing.

But MJ has an amazing soulffull voice.

How is Prince technically better?

Prince can scream but those screams aren’t achieved with proper technique and many rock artist do it without proper technique.

Of course MJ can’t go as low. Their voices have different placements. MJ is often classified as a light lyric tenor or a high tenor. Prince is often clarified as a light baritone or dramatic tenor.

I will say Prince’s range is amazing for a baritone until you realize that his chest voice is limited so therefore he relies on falsetto and he doesn’t mix well- Something MJ mastered as a child.
Power? Princes voice is naturally heavier than MJs if that’s what you mean. MJ is known for his belting in the chest range so I’m not sure where you’re getting that he lacks ‘power’- Something Prince struggles with

What I love most about Princes voice is how he managed to do alot with not as much natural ability as someone like MJ. He also improved alot vocally through the years.

If that's what U call getting checked. U fell short sweety. Because it was NOTHING to check. I already proved my point.

Look! I tried to meet half way with U. By saying "you're right vocals are like an instrument." But that didn't work.

So I would appreciate it if U don't address me anymore. I'm done with U..

No you didn’t meet me anywhere, your tone and your responses are very passive aggressive. Second, I’m not your ‘sweetie’.
Third, you were wrong for trying to check my grammar where it wasn’t needed. A simple I misread would’ve sufficed considering my reply wasn’t rude towards you.

Weird thing about Prince to me was that he actually did have a great chest voice and you usually saw it live (the SOTT movie versions > album songs). It was his style though to switch it up between dramatic high notes/nasal mid/deep low notes/Camille and it seemed to me like on record he didn't really care about smoothness but more about innovation/rough feel. Like how 2 of his greatest songs "Money Dont Matter 2 Night" & "If I Was Your Girlfriend" both contain technical errors on the vocal. To me, the best Prince chest voice performances are on "1999," "Purple Rain," parts of "Parade" & "Symbol Album." I always got the vibe he didn't care about cleaning up vocals or giving his 100% all the time.

MJ on the other hand took his God-given natural vocal ability and honed it into one of the most classic voices in pop history. Later like some parts of "History" & "Invincible" his vocals were a little sloppy sometimes but I think it was a conscious decision on his part to 'spit-sing'. But 9 out of 10 times he killed the vocals even on songs that were meh.

2 different artists with 2 different approaches to singing cool Glad I can enjoy each where the other lacks.

Maybe eye do, just not like eye did before pimp2

With Prince I agree his chest voice, well his voice overall became better/stronger as the years went by.

With Prince the music can carry the song of its not A1. Musically something interesting is always happening.
With MJ some of his songs I listen to mainly for his vocal performance and deliveries. Even ‘spit-singing’ requires technical ability. It’s called staccato and very few have the ability to sing it in perfect timing as MJ.
On Invincible I noticed he wasn’t as vocally agile and shouted in some upper registers.

Geez. I think it was intended to have already been out. But they're constantly touring and he does gigs with Ringo on the side. Possibly this year, I'll inquire again online and see if he responds.

I think it'd be immensely useful considering he has a first hand account of many of the recording sessions in terms of creativity and input; i think some of those guys have been the first to recall how Michael was known to sing each part and give the musician an idea of what he was looking for.
How extensive that is. ...err

We won't know until primary sources give up the goods. And unfortunately many of the session players have passed or are in a bad state

UPDATE: **AMAZON USA has the artwork posted: "The gospel according to Luke", Amazon UK states May 24th 2018, and it's available to order. Another website states April 5th, and that's all I've gotten so far. I hope it's more extensive than most autos. From all appearances it looks to be coming out within a month. alternately listed as either 272 pages or 352 pages
