If it's GREAT, NEW, FUNKY MUSIC you're after then I'd advise you to check out the latest album by a guy called Boulevards. The album is called Hurtown, USA.

I don't know how to post videos from YouTube on here but check out his song "Steady".

And perhaps post that video for me?

In the last year or so, NxWorries, Moonchild, Kelela, FKJ, and others have put out some really good albums or series of songs.

Charlie Puth's forthcoming Voicenotes album is sure to be something Prince fans can get into. Why? Because he has a deep affection for Jam & Lewis production and R&B music. "How Long" and "Attention" gives credence to that. He's talked about how he wanted to channel that late 80s and early 90s Jam & Lewis production that was crisp yet lush (think "Human" by Human League as an example). He has perfect pitch, which I always find fascinating. In one interview, someone's sneaker squeaked against the floor and he said, "That was a G. The sneaker, it was a G." In another interview, a plane flew over. He said, "The plane is a B flat. Oh wait, now it's an F." He went to the piano and picked out the note of the tone of the plane engines. To see him put together a song is pretty fascinating, too.

Jorja Smith is amazing. Start with "Teenage Fantasy". She falls in the Sy Smith, Leela James, younger Alicia Keys mxed with Duffy & a dash of Amy Winehouse area. She's how neo-soul should sound in 2018.

Paloma Faith's "The Bigger You Love" is such a wonderful throwback to 60s soul. Reverby vocals, grown-Motown-esque production.

Chlöe Howl "Do It Alone" is so fun.

Sigrid gives me new Alanis meets Robyn vibes. Listen to "Strangers".

dodie's "In The Middle" is fun minimal synth girl pop.

Starchild & The New Romantic - Language. The album just came out yesterday, it’s soulful, funky and has some serious purple vibes. Favourite of the year so far.

Hey! I had no idea Boulevards had a new album out. I have his first album which was cool but this one sounds very 80s funk. Just downloaded it. Cheers!

i dig Jorja Smith too... i definitely agree that Alicia Keyes + Amy Winehouse + Sy Smith = Jorja Smith...and she's better looking than all 3 of them...my favorite songs of hers are "Carry Me Home", "I Am", and "On My Mind"

Charlie Puth is cool...but it seems like hes doing what Mayer Hawthorne/Tuxedo has already done...

I mean, I don't think so. It's a bit like saying, "Well Ready For The World is doing what Prince already did". Yes, and no.

Mayer & Charlie are sorta in the same genre of pop music. But to hear Puth talk about music, and chords, and his perfect pitch, and his approach to music - it's as mathematical as it is a true musician's approach to music. I think Mayer, Eli "Paperboy" Reed, and Charlie are all similar in just being a new and truly fresh approach to pop music.

I think it was Mayer who told Daryl Hall that he used to create soul music to have something to sample. Because using samples or loops from existing Motown music was expensive, he would write a groove or hook, then sample it in a different way in his music. So he had a certain sound and folks thought "Is that..." "Nope, I did that". That's pretty clever, really, in order to get a sound of sampling old soul music, you just write the old soul, then resample it in a diff way.

I wish Paperboy was more popular than he is these days. He's been consistent with album output, but no one pays attention to him, at least not in the U.S. And listen, in a world where Rihanna and Bieber are considered "relevant", I'll welcome the Puths and Mayers and Elis of the music world with open arms.

No problem. If you like Boulevards you should check out a guy called XL Middleton. He had a new album out last year called Things Are Happening. Same kind of thing as Boulevards. Old school funk that you just don't hear on the radio these days.

True, for example, I just took a listen to the Jack Moves' self-titled 2015 album and came away very impressed. Is that "new"?
