You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Excellent choice. I came close to listing The World, as well. That album has so much soul...

Also, as popular as War was(is), I'm still not sure they get the credit that they deserve. In terms of playing funky, soulful music, I'd put War up there with any funk band. Their funk wasn't as pure as some other funk bands, but War had so much feeling...

And @MickyDolenz(the post before Babynoz), excellent choices. Especially the O'Jays and Whodini. I thought of both of those albums, as well. My parents were major O'Jays fans, and So Full Of Love was constantly played on the turntable. And just about every song on that album takes me back to a certain place and time. And Whodini's, Escape? Man, for a couple years that album was the soundtrack to my life. As we all(80's hip hop kids) probably know, a lot of great parties were had when Escape was popped in the cassette deck, or when the needle dropped. In my mind, Escape is one of the greatest hip hop party albums ever.

All you homies posting 172 albums are definitely cheating. The fun part of this thread is
taking all of your favorite 172 albums and condensing it down to five. So, anybody can list
13 of their favorite albums - it takes work and thought and effort to whittle it down to 5!

prince albums shouldnt be included...this is non prince music forum

Prince albums should absolutely be included. If you love Prince so much that you prefer five of his albums more than anyone else's then be honest and post them. And no "one album per artist" nonsense either. Be true to yourself and don't penalize any artist for being great.

No! Sure we all like Prince, but lists like these would be very boring if everybody mentioned the same albums.

Agreed; these are personal choices, and Orger tastes intersect often, but vary to different degrees.

Donny Hathaway- Extensions Of A Man

Funkadelic- Cosmic Slop

Meshell Ndegeocello- Plantation Lullabies

Top-5 albums is too few to list, 'cause inevitably we start second-guessing and trying to include samples of different genres and so on... but, er (grumble, grumble) I'll try it. My list excludes compilations:

The Beatles -- Please Please Me

John Coltane -- A Love Supreme

The Stone Roses

Prince & the Revolution -- Purple Rain

U2 -- The Joshua Tree

But, if you asked me another day, it might be:

John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band

Dave Brubeck Quartet -- Time Out

The Beatles -- Let It Be... Naked

Joni Mitchell -- Clouds... or Ladies of the Canyon... or Blue

Stevie Wonder -- Songs in the Key of Life

Then, if you asked me on another day, it might be:

Sinead O'Connor -- The Lion & The Cobra

U2 -- Achtung Baby

The Grapes of Wrath -- Now and Again

Prince -- Sign O' The Times

Bob Dylan -- Bringing It All Back Home

Etc., etc....

Janet Jackson - Control

MC Lyte - Eyes On This

Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life

Solid list. Eyes On This doesn't get enough love. Lyte was one of the great MC's of her era.

Ya know? And I really like the production from Marley Marl, Audio Two, and King Of Chill (Alliance).

I saw her live in '91 and her DJ had skills.

Isn't Milk from Audio Two her brother?

I think it's impossible for me to truly rank everything because what I love in any given moment depends on my mood. But if I limit it to english speaking artists, in this moment this would be it:

1) Prince - 1999

2) Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll

3) Dead Can Dance - Towards the Within

4) Nick Cave & The Badseeds - The Boatman's Call

5) Peter Murphy - Cascade

-----

If I completed a top 10, I would include:

6) Miles Davis -On the Corner

7) David Bowie - Blackstar

8) Laura Nyro - Eli & the 13th Confession

9) Bjork - Medulla

10) Meshel Ndegeocello - The World has Made me the man of my dreams

honorable mention: Alabama Shakes - Sound & Color

I heard them say she was LIKE a little sister to them, but she isn't related! I thought they meant sister and brother literally.

I am listening to Audio Two - What More Can I Say album RIGHT NOW lol Kirk and Nat Robinson are Audio Two, and their dad Nat Senior ran First Priority Music.

INXS - Welcome to wherever you are
Steve Wonder - Talking Book
