Not at all, no one can beat the original, Marvin's take is more dramatioc that it should have been.

The Royalettes. Their version was recorded in 1965. Laura Nyro remade the song in 1971. Then Deniece in 1982.
Deniece's was the first version I heard; but I must say, I have a soft spot for nostalgia and I like the original more.

Aye. She did a kick-@$$ job with the remake. The way the producers and musicians twisted the music to fit the changing times (18 years after the original) was absolutely outstanding.

I like the New Birth version better than Perry Como's You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Speaking of covers, I always thought as to how brilliant Margie Joseph's rendition of The Supremes' Stop! In the Name of Love was.

I always liked the Staple Singers' cover of "Slippery People" much greater than The Talking Heads.

It's a cool cover but it's more or less the same as the version on Stop Making Sense which was recorded around the same time, I wonder did either version influence the other or did they just arrive at the same place?
