Why do most modern R&B singers sound like they are whining most of the time? There is a guy here at work listening to some generic new R&B guy and I must say that every single song sounds like he is just whining. It is painfully annoying.
What happened to music like Marvin Gaye, Al Green, James Brown and good music like that? These new guys just seem to whine. It is annoying me. SUPERJOINT RITUAL - http://www.superjointritual.com

Not sure about the whining per se, but during any modern period most artists are a bunch of band-wagon jumpers. Fear is the mind-killer.

whining is the easiest way to express some sort of emotion in music, through the voice. even if it's not whining, per se, that's how it sounds to the ear.
there aren't enough people that are talented enough to infuse their vocals with real emotions, so they settle on this one to make it sound as if they can.

Good point... maybe they should just skip it. I fucking hate that whiny shit... maybe they should yell like the hard rockers... you know, anger instead of whining pussy shit. I fucking hate that whiny shit... maybe they should yell like the hard rockers... you know, anger instead of whining pussy shit. i think they should give it up too. if you're a good technical singer, be that. if you're good at expressing emotion in your voice, but can't hit the high notes or whatever, be that. if you can do both, then by all means do it. but if not, just stick to what you know. that means you Mariah Carey...

Watch this, I am going to say something nice about Prince:
Prince is technically an R&B singer... he is a great singer and doesn't whine like a fucking idiot. I truly respect his talent. SUPERJOINT RITUAL - http://www.superjointritual.com

It started when kids were encouraged to sing from the sinuses instead of from the gut, and it continued when people started mistaking talent for the simple ability to pack as many notes into each second of singing as (in)humanly possible.

True... there is no real melody to the tuneless warbling of these shitty R&B singers... they are simply whining. Can these people not hold a single note? Is it really necessary for every word to span at least 5 notes moving up and down and for these five notes to be repeated at least 10 times per word? What's even worse than the whining, are the lyrics that they are *singing*
You could practically write an R&B song in like 5 minutes. Just pick from a stock collection of standard R&B phrases like: "baby, baby please" "girl you know you did me wrong" "lets do it all night" ...and many more. Viola`! not only are you an R&B singer, but now you're also a songwriter!

Damn straight! How ironic!!! As soon as I saw this thread I thought of how Mariah Carey's singing drives me to the point of insanity! If I were to listen to an entire song of hers... I just might go For some reason, when she does the voice fluctuations... My brain cringes. I actually FEEL it! She is worst than Babs if you ask me...
