It felt like he was trying to cram a 90 minute concert into 15 minutes and as a result it looked like an unfocused mess. He's usually a really good showman, but it didn't come across that way tonight.
What he should have done is.....chose 3 of his best songs, take his time and perform those in their entirety....and maybe a few minutes of a new song from his new album. His performance seemed rushed and chaotic.I don't know why some artists feel that they have to give us a complete overview of their career when they only have about 12 minutes, lol.
That is exactly what I said. He tried to cram too many songs in. |

This board will look for any reason to hate Justin Timberlake because the media, predominantly consituted of white people, gushes over his music as if he's the Chosen One or Heir Apparent to Michael Jackson, the gentleman who 99% of Orgers worship. But, you're right: as long as JT acknowledges his artistic debt to his Black American forebears, which he does (he is so obviously influenced by Michael Jackson and relies upon Black American artistic standards in presenting his music), then he's fine with me too because Justin Timberlake knows he's not the Chosen One and he knows he's not the Heir Apparent. He can't help it if white media members love to promote their own over others who may be more deserving but aren't white.
Besides, I know a few of the band members who play in his band, predominantly constituted of Black American musicians who work and make a good living because Justin Timberlake appreciates Black American art forms.
Prince's half time show was chock-full of hits crammed into a brief time period as well but you won't hear any Prince sycophant utter one criticism about this . . .

And check out this guy up here trying to downplay Prince's moment like it didn't seem like brother could control the weather and didn't slay a medley of other people's hits during his show too? You know, just because. Timberlake couldn't even dare sing someone else's lyrics let alone a full on reinterpretation. [Edited 2/5/18 15:22pm]

Gah!!!
Look, Prince is dead--so if his songs are going to be played, somebody else is going to have to play them. And people want to--he's too important for people to not give a nod to when they're in Minneapolis (at least, and he's personally important to enough other artists that he's going to get covered pretty regularly). He also had a habit of mentioning death in a number of songs--you can't just imagine those songs away. I Would Die 4 U was a great song before he died, one lots of people liked (and still do). You don't say (or shouldn't say) Oh, you can't play that now! Let's Go Crazy talks about dying and has an elevator in the chorus! Yeah, it was hard to listen to for awhile, but it's one of the songs it makes sense for people to play--it's accessible, gives itself over to a lot of people's abilities--and the crowd can become involved. What do you want people to play? It wasn't Purple Rain or Nothing Compares 2 U again, at least. And if you really just object to people playing his songs at all... well, too bad. He covered songs in concert by artists he respected, people cover him in the same way. Get over it. He's dead, and whining every time someone plays one of his songs is boring. I'd prefer people played a lot more varied songs by him--but I realize that these big shows are going to have to go with the popular ones in order to hit the larger audience.
Gah your damn self. How the fuck you sat there and wrote a damn essay about things i never said is beyond me. Just once i wish that u assclowns would reply to what is actually written instead of making shit up. All we said was odd song choice. Either address that or stfu.
The response wasn't just to you, but to the general response everytime someone covers something, and to earlier complaints about the NBC Super Bowl promo. But as to the song choice issue you think I should address: I already did. So I will gladly stfu until I have something else to say. [Edited 2/5/18 16:32pm] |

I said in another topic that I went in with my expectations set real low and came out of it satisfied. The Prince tribute was nice but it did feel kinda forced; just because they were in Minneapolis doesn't mean he had to make reference to Prince.
Overall, I enjoyed some things but after reading that USA Today article and rewatching certain parts, there are obvious things I didn't pick up on when watching live (like JT's vocal track playing as he was kicking around the mic stand). I guess I really wasn't that into it if I didn't notice that
Decent stuff but definitely more flash and spectacle than an actual performance.

Good point. In all the praise for Prince's Superbowl performance, people may not realize that he:
* Played only one verse of "Let's Go Crazy" and included a lot of guitar solo and call-and-response parts * Played the only the opening riff of "1999" and then * Played only the opening verse and chorus of "Baby, I'm a Star" before going into cover songs * And finished with only the first verse of "Purple Rain" and its chorus, ending with mostly guitar solos and call-and-response parts
You know, that breakdown makes Prince's performance sound kind of lame. I almost think it can't be right, but Princevault won't open for me right now, and I don't remember anything else. I know the actual performance was pretty cool (and the Watchtower/Best of You inclusion was interesting and surprising), the playing was great, the rain and use of the silhouette led to some iconic moments. But for a performance so many people point to as an example of Prince's greatness, it's kind of too bad there's not other songs included instead, so people looking it up might hear something new (though different songs wouldn't have worked, and there's nothing really to fault in the choice). |

Yes only if one never watched it. The 1999 intro was just a segue from LGC to Baby I’m a Star. Timberlake did 10 songs (11 if you include Prince tribute). Prince did 6. IMO 10 is too many for the amount of time and it felt like JT was rushing from song to song to fit them all in. Paisley Park is in your heart

Prince is not going anywhere as he left a vast music catalogue that he has not even been dug into fully. If you think the only problem with Justin is his stupid joke then you have no clue.
As far as the Super Bowl performance. Justin has weak songs and what he should have done was come out and perform one or two with the full band and left the dancing alone. It is Broadway or is he in a band.
Yes, and I was one of them but in order to generate continued interest, as well as introduce younger fans to Prince's music, having a pop star like JT perform a tribute at the most watched sporting event in America is a huge plus. Regardless of your personal feelings on JT, having him perform a Prince song at the Superbowl and then go on Jimmy Fallon and say Prince is the greatest musician of all time is A GOOD THING. It will encourage more people my age and younger to check out Prince's stuff and with the increased demand for Prince music comes the release of more Prince music from the vault. This isn't a hard concept to grasp but for some reason some people can't put their personal feelings aside and accept that JT promoting Prince is beneficial for everyone.
Yeah the legacy that Prince has will live on a long time. I think people (self included) are just annoyed that Timberfake has a long track record of being a "Culture vulture" and having been disrespectful towards Prince on more than one occassion while he was still alive. I think that's the source of anger more than anything really. Trolls be gone! |

Yes you're right Laura, his performance wasn't really great. I think he could've done better, it kind of shocked me because I always thought he was such a good performer
I am not a hugh fan but I found it a little shocking as well. Playing the Super Bowl before an album release and tour is hugh for the kick off. It seemed like he had no energy and I really think if he had come out and just did two songs with just his band he would have been good.
He needs to lose the dancers as he is almost 40 and I watched this with a 12 years old who did not know who he was and keep calling him an old guy.
He needs to put the focus on the music kind of like Prince did doing the One Night Alone shows.
I think most 12 year olds would agree that anyone over 18 is "old"
I agree that he looked out of energy and the whole show seemed off really. Trolls be gone! |

But does Justin Timberlake lowering the microphone stand or responding to Prince's "sexy never left" comment exclude him from performing a Prince tribute. It's not like JT only became a Prince fan after he died, like a lot of these celebrities who are now suddenly Prince fans but never once brought up his work when he was alive. JT went on record and said that Prince was the primary influence behind the FutureSexLoveSound album while he was promoting it. So he's undoubtedly a fan. And what right does anyone else have to tell him not to honour the man who inspired him? As for Timberlake being a culture vulture, of course he is. But he grew up listening to Michael Jackson and Prince, he can't help who his favourite artists are. |

Prince's half time show was chock-full of hits crammed into a brief time period as well but you won't hear any Prince sycophant utter one criticism about this . . .
D, are u remotely comparing Prince's halftime show 2 what we just witnessed last night?
Not at all! Justin Timberlake's performance two nights ago was not as enjoyable as Prince's performance.
But, both of their Super Bowl half-time shows featured 328 songs crammed into a matter of minutes, yet you won't see anybody here criticizing Prince for it. I'm simply pointing out the double standards this board has and the anti-white media bias it has towards Justin Timberlake which then manifests itself as an uncritical disdain for him.

—Funny all the critics who still rave about it are not sycophants. The media is printed plenty about it this week and they were supposed to be talking about Justin. Do not get mad just get over it. The Purple Army is large and is not going away.
I'm not mad at all. I don't think you understood what I was saying in my post:
1) I didn't call any critic a sycophant. So, I don't know why you're making a quip about critics still raving. Instead, I called some members of the Org who won't remove MJ's teat from their mouth, or Prince's too, sycophants. And, I'm willing to bet the farm that if JT didn't musically acknowledge Prince in Minneapolis on Sunday night, this board would have lost its fucken mind!
2) There was nothing in my post that was critical towards Prince. A Super Bowl half-time show is usually less than 15 minutes. A global pop star with a catalog as expansive as Prince's and JT's is going to feel pressure in performing truncated versions of their hit songs, so you're going to have a performance that can feel rushed. Prince did it, and JT did it too. Yet, I don't remember anyone in the Org criticizing Prince for it back in '07. The only reason why this thread is criticizing JT for doing the same thing Prince did is because most Orgers don't like the media attention JT receives and then use that alone to hate on JT. The Purple Army may be large and not going away, but it certainly could use some critical thinking skills, eh?
Here comes the post that says: "But, JT's music sucks. It's not good as the critics say it is; that's why I hate Justin Timberlake." And that would be my point: it's not JT's fault that white critics think he's hot shit. He knows he's not as good as white media members make him out to be.
Don't hate the player; hate the game.
