Madonna vs Bootleggers

Have a look at this. What would P think of this one?

http://www.mtv.com/news/a...lines=true

Madonna To Pirates: 'What the Fuck Do You Think You're Doing?'

File traders, Madonna has a question for you: "What the f--- do you think you're doing?"

That's the message you're likely to get if you try to download songs from the singer's upcoming American Life, due April 22, on peer-to-peer networks such as Limewire or KaZaA.

The spoofed file — a planted fake meant to thwart illegal downloading — recently began flooding P2P networks. Madonna's spokesperson could not be reached for comment. Other spoofed files containing Madonna's salty tirade appeared on KaZaA in versions of the new songs "Nobody Knows Me" and "X-Static Process."

If you don't get the foul-mouthed message from Madonna, you will more than likely find a phony file that's been circulating for several weeks, a four-minute loop of the chorus from the album's title track and first single.

As with many new releases, the Madonna album has been kept under tight wraps to avoid piracy, with promotional copies being held back from journalists until just before the official release.

Similar security measures preceded the release of Linkin Park's Meteora, with numerous spoofed tracks from that album blanketing P2P networks, many consisting of looped interview quotes from the band's members or repeated sections of songs (see "Digital Decoys Are Making Frustrated Pirates Say 'Arrr' "). Both Linkin Park and Madonna are on Warner Bros. Records.

Though they are reluctant to divulge their client list, a number of companies have been working with labels to create spoofed files in an effort to make illegal downloading frustrating and to steer consumers toward such legal download sites as Pressplay, MusicNet and Rhapsody.

you can spot a looped file from a mile off.you only have to listen to it as you're downloading.Just queue a few files up and you're bound to hit paydirt with one of them.

it only works up until the songs are actually available to burn and up/download.

this article's about a week or 2 old. at that point, none of the tracks had made their way onto the net.

Wow - what a surprise since you have a reputation for stealing what you want without regard to anyone else's rights. My guess is when you walk your dog you don't bother to clean up his shit either.

I think we should take the sample of her voice saying that and put together a dance mix in the spirit of "If Madonna Calls"

Actually I think this is a pretty good plan - flood the download market with fake songs. Have the first 60 seconds be the actual song then have it convert over to Yoko screaming for the remainder of the song. Make the fake songs be the same length as the real songs. It won't stop everyone but some people will get tired of downloading when they discover what they downloaded was shit.

Tell you what, if I was a Madonna fan, I'd want to download that as a collector's item or something. It would make great mixdisc fodder. Actually, I think I'll do that tonight. Maybe, while looking for this newsworthy item, I'll accidentally download the real thing! Thanks, Maddy!

Here's the AP article:

Madonna floods Web with fake tracks

Associated Press

Reuters
Apr. 17, 2003 11:06 AM

NEW YORK - The Madonna camp is looking to clamp down on online peer-to-peer piracy of her new Maverick album, ''American Life,'' by flooding file-sharing networks with decoy files.

Those who download tracks from such services as KaZaA are greeted by the voice of Madonna asking, ''What the f+++ do you think you're doing?'' The new album is due April 22; the title track is No. 37 this week on the Billboard Hot 100.

Madonna is no stranger to pre-release piracy. In the lead-up to her 2000 set ''Music,'' unfinished portions of the title cut flooded such services as Napster. No advances were sent to journalists for ''American Life''; instead, in what has become a common practice, writers were asked to listen to the record at the office of Madonna's publicist.

Meanwhile, Madonna is making her major-label repertoire available to digital music services, but is restricting permanent ownership offers to those who buy an entire album; individual tracks are not available for purchase on a stand-alone basis.

What's more, the artist is not making her music available on a rental basis. Such usage rules leave subscription services like MusicNet, Pressplay, and Rhapsody out in the cold. Those services offer their music as streams or conditional downloads, then allow subscribers to select individual tracks for burning; they do not offer albums for purchase in a bundled form.

The strategy is not in step with Maverick parent company Warner Music Group's primary digital music stance. The major has made more than 45,000 tracks from its catalog available for a la carte purchase, with virtually no usage restrictions. Warner Music declined comment on Madonna's online offerings.

Why is it that whenever someone posts something negative about an artist you like you feel the need to attack our man Prince? It's very juvenile...

of course, there isn't really anything to defend here, because i don't think it's a bad thing that artists and labels try to keep internet piracy from happening. they have every right to do what they can about it as far as how they can trick internet users from downloading and passing around their stuff. what i have a problem with is when they take legal action against fans. if they're able to prevent it themselves, more power to them. i think it's great that they came up with a way to outsmart the internet downloaders with this album until just this past week, instead of going after the fans downloading the files or the software makers.

that post was sorta in response to you saying 'it's ugly. it says nothing meaningful. it makes no point. it's inflammatory for the sake of being inflammatory'

i'm just replying to stuff i read...and i mean a few posts shouldn't be construed as being 'up in your sh*t...' sorry to have made it seem so...

as for the one on this thread, you know i've always said i didn't understand why people who haven't liked prince for years still devote time & money to him..and why it's unpopular to actually like him even tho the site is called prince.org...
