Paul Simon to retire ... Well after the loss of Prince ... seems fitting that well ... after many great albums and such .... my new music will be deminishing even more ...

i read the online message to fans etc ... and he is going out with a tour in 2018 - and I thought "good for him " but ... still kinda at a loss ....

like prince and bowie, thankfully, we'll always have the wonderful records he gave us...simon is a woefully under appreciated national treasure. i'm grateful to have lived in a time when i could see him perform and produce new music. |

My favourite version of that song, which is also a good example of what I do like about his singing style. It's true that he doesn't have a conventionally powerful voice, but I've always liked his 'conversational' style of singing, especially from Graceland onwards, and the way he manages to be expressive within a very narrow melodic range. Yeah, they're both great songs in that conversational style - and I guess You Can Call Me Al would be the most well-known example. I remember, years ago, thinking to myself that you realise just how hard it is to carry off that style convincingly when you hear it aped badly. some good comments - looking at the one trick pony clip ... i am reminded how complex paul was - i always thought it would be a cool colaboration between Prince and Paul .... Prince had the melodies and Paul had the lyrics but .. never happen ...
in that one trick pony clip - the legend Steve Gadd (most drummers say the best jazz drummer ) , tony levin (bass ) were very accomplished jazz people ... i think even Richard Tee the keyboard player had his own albums ...
One trick pony also brings back memories - i was a Paul Simon fan before Prince ... and also a Neil Diamond fan altho alil less with Neil .... they both tried movies similar to "purple rain " - BEFORE Prince did purple rain .... Paul simon and Neil had movies out around 1980 .... Paul with one trick pony and Neil with the Jazz singer remake .... both tried to portray that "live act" and really did not catch the excitement that Princes movie did ....
i dont get how one would say Paul cant sing . I love his voice and always found his songs easy to sing along with .... (in general ) ...
I do say he is a very complex singer/songwriter .... i remember watching a guitarist explain how complex paul was with his chords etc .... if you just google a favorite Paul song - its kinda mind blowing how complex some of the songs are .... Even though the show was a flop, and the album not a hit, I consider "The Capeman" one of his most underrated works. I've seen Simon in concert several times, as recently as 2016. Always great #SOCIETYDEFINESU | |

"the capeman" was an interesting move in his career ... i just finished the paul simon biography and ... it had a few interesting twists getting that show made ....
another thing in Pauls life that was interesting was - how after he and garfunkel had some initial success - when they were very young (16 and on american bandstand ?) they then parted ways after a few non successful tracks etc and paul spent some great time after college in europe ...
it hurt artie even back then ... Pauls constant going off on his own etc ... and I think it is still a cause of hurt in their toxic relationship ... Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet. |
