Who's the most over/under rated?

Sometimes it seems as if the music world is upside down. With the lesser talented acts gettin' mad play and promotion while those that are the real deal get passed by or not as much push as they should get. Who do y'all feel fall into each group? Here are few.

Overrated: Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, Emenim, Justin Timberlake, Brittany Spears, Ashanti, and Jlo.

Underrated: Jaguar Wright, Remy Shand, Maxwell, Raphael Saadiq, Donnie, Angel Grant, Mint Condition, and Prince (very underrated considering the legend he is)

Harlepolis

Underrated:Prince, Chaka Khan, Angela Winbush, Aaliyah, Phyllis Hyman, Cassandrah Wilson and the list goes on & on till the break of down.

Overrated: Most of what you see in the TV right now(altho I don't mind Alicia being overrated)

I am essentially IN AGREEMENT with your overrated & underrated lists.

There are probably MANY MORE overrated types, but I can't think of them right now. I think there are more overrated "artists" in large part because today it's LESS about talent & more about THE LOOK..
& in some cases, simply being in the right place at the right time.

Throw out some more overrated & underrated types, intha916..
I want to (legitimately) disagree with you SOMEWHERE!

Actually I agree with everyone of your underrated choices (besides the Police) but I was thinking more about todays acts. It's cool if y'all want to expand this to all time though. If thats the case I would add:

Over: Kiss, Ozzy Osborne, Dianna Ross, Frank Sanatra, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis,

Under: Boz Scaggs. Bobby Caldwell, Rick James, Switch, Sly Stone, Ronnie Laws, Hall and Oats,

Under: Joe, DJ Quick, and Heavy D (I know he's an older cat but I forgot him on my all time list)

I know where he's coming from listing them. When I say overrated, it doesn't always mean I think the person is garbage. More a case of them not being "all that" they are made out to be. To me Alicia Keys is a perfect example of this. Her album was aiight but by no means a classic record.

Devils Adovacate here.I think all Major Artists are Over&Under/rated because you can make a Argument for&against them based on various factors.also it boils down to Money&who gets the chance to shine but you can bet your behind that in every city&state throughout the country&the World you can find somebody just sitting around doing whatever goes as the in thing in the Music Business but who is gonna get that chance?

I still am pretty much in agreement.. I MIGHT say that Destiny's Child was/is more "overhyped" than overrated..
maybe because of "Bouncee"..?

Good point but I'm talking about folks who are way out to the range in which they are perceived. Average/poor acts who are thought of as great(Alicia) or great acts who get no play (Saadiq) or not enough props for how great they are (Prince)

I said what I said because it's way to early to say Alica Keys.I Mean She has had alot of Success&Won Industry Awards just has Norah Jones but come back to me after Her 5th Album&then we can talk. Saadiq is Very Successful&the Cat keeps Royality Checks Coming&Gets Industry Props.now as far as a Solo Album goes it did Tank but when He is in a Band or Writing&Producing for other folks He does really well.nobody has slept on Him.as for Prince: He had His Hey Day of Prime/Peak&Dominating.it happens to all Major Acts at some point where they are longer in the Main light&it's not folks have totally forgotten about them but a New generation of Ears comes along&dances to the Beat of a New Drummer.everybody has there chance in the Sun if given that moment?

All we are talking about is how they are perceived RIGHT NOW. Maybe Alica will turn in 4-5 classic albums down the road but the other thing we can work with is what she has given us so far. The point is, they act as if she has already has created some timeless shit. She hasn't IMO that's why she's on my list. Raphy's solo joint was slept on and he lost his record deal despite being up for a grammie for a song from that same record. If that's not underrated I don't know what the hell is. As for Prince, it's not a matter of having his day and it being over. It's a matter of how he is viewed RIGHT NOW. He is an all time legend but you wouldn't know that if you watched a lot of these retrospec shows. Example: VH1 ran a special about the Arsineo Hall Show. But when going over all the muscial acts he had on they never once showed or mentioned Prince. I remember him ripping it up with 2-3 songs from the symbol album but they skipped right by that. The showed Elton John, Sting, TLC, and Snoop to name a few. But no Prince. Just one example but I see this type of thing happen a lot when it comes to Prince getting props.

And I agree about Alicia... people act like she's the only woman in the world that is decent on the piano. The first time I heard her, I shook my head and hoped her career would be over as soon as possible.

and intha916... how could you say the Roots are overrated? omfg They barely get enough publicity as it is... disbelief

how can it be that janet, madonna and the stones are overrated? Janet is the queen of all these young ass dirty little trifling pop dancer wannabes...madonna has made marketing an artform and could probably sell her SEX book to the pope...and the stones are the epitome of rock n' roll (or should i say sex, drugs and rock n'roll). They are what the beatles never had the balls to be (uh-oh, now i've done it smile). There are about 3 peeps on your under list that actually are underrated...
