Spotify sued for $1.6 billion over Tom Petty, Doors songs

http://money.cnn.com/2018/01/03/technology/spotify-lawsuit-wixen-songs/index.html

A leading music publishing company is going after streaming giant Spotify with a $1.6 billion dollar lawsuit.

Wixen Music Publishing accused Spotify of using artists' music "without a license and without compensation," according to documents filed in a California court on Friday.

Wixen handles copyright management and royalty compliance for artists including Tom Petty, The Doors, Neil Young and Missy Elliot.

Petty's "Free Falling," Rage Against the Machine's "Calm Like A Bomb" and more than 10,000 other songs are listed in the lawsuit. Wixen is seeking damages of $150,000 per song, the maximum award possible under the U.S. Copyright Act.

Tom Petty's cause of death was released today, too. Per his family, "an accidental drug overdose" due to taking several medications. They mentioned that he had a lot of pain, too. Not to take it off topic, but that breaks my heart.

Wow, that's pretty bad. Hopefully, they have good lawyers to stay on top of this.

Could 1.6 billion bring the company down? It's been deemed "unprofitable" for years already.

I'm going to be honest here and just admit that I'd like to see them go. I can't stand the Internet monopolies and never thought that music would be primarily acquired from 1-2 services.

I would love it if they went out of business. Artist need to stream their own and keep the bulk of the profits for themselves.
Idiot record companies made deals were the company gets paid and the artist get nothing.Ridculous
