Question about lyric in Madonna's "Express Yourself"? I have a question about this lyric in Madonna's "Express Yourself": Don't go for second best, baby Put your love to the test When Madonna sings "don't go for second best" - is she advising the listener to be more selective of men, or more selective of life in general? I mean, "second best" usually mean less desirable things being "on the market" - it can be lovers or even material possessions. I'm probably looking too deep into this and probably answered my question. But what do you think?

Go only for the best, nothing less give it all for whatever you wish.

As someone who took this to heart for decades, got to agree with 214. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

The lyrics go on with "make him express..." so i think she is talking about a man and how you should go with the "best" guy there is. I always felt like you go with someone who puts you on the first place and not someone who doesnt care fully about you. Not fully with materialistic things, but as a person. Its obviously about relationships, however a person can use that in any context. The lyrics discuss a man abusing a woman mentally and saying she should not sit there and take it. It is about self confidence and not letting anyone step all over you. "Satin sheets are very romantic..what happens when you're not there??" Insinuating he is abusing the relationship because, if the time is not right, then move on. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
