Something is happening that is allowing for only Rihanna and Beyonce, both black, to be considered legends of this generation.

I’m not a huge Rihanna fan but I do like some of her stuff. There’s no doubt she’s perhaps seen as the madonna for my Generation (I’m 27) like there’s been no pop star not even Beyonce or lady Gaga or Taylor Swift. Where I can remember her music and new songs played yearly like her first single came out when I was in 8th grade. And from 8th grade till now she’s had a few hits every fucking year since then! and she’s got a lot more left in her. She just needs that like a prayer or ray of light type album To really put her over. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Indeed. If this were a different time, Rihanna probably would have changed labels to signify this change and negotiate her creative control. Then we would get a Greatest Hits covering her pop years and better albums going forward. “Rihanna The Elektra Years” would come out in 2024.

Great post. There's this tendency for older generation fans of entertainers to dismiss young entertainers who have had the success that Rihanna has had because she's not of the their generation and therefore is without their approval, she's nothing to them. The good thing is that Rihanna isn't dependent on this demographic to define her legacy. That's a good look for her. At the least, she's an icon of 21st century commercial entertainment and going forward, everything that she does in that realm is something that is supported by a much stronger foundation than earlier in her career. The music industry is a money-making machine. They will eat you up and spit you out. Once they use you up and are done with you -- out you go!! . All these silly labels they put on artist's today is ridiculous! It's like they make up new awards, just to have more money rolling-in. I don't listen to the radio because I don't care to hear the same song 50x per day and I stopped watching award shows, because it's a joke. . It's not about older people not liking Rihanna. I'm sure she has a lot of older fans as well as young. Rihanna is a product, and at the end of the day, that is all she is to record executives.

Her music is not rememorable like Madonna, Michael, Whitney, Phil etc. Producing a bunch of hits doesnt mean anything when your music doesn't stand the test time or have quality, in fact I beleive Taylor has surpass Madonna and Rhianna with the most hits on billboard. We now have Cardi B who's broken several records and Nicki Minaj who broke Aretha Franklin Billboard record which took decades for Franklin thanks the rule changes. So it doesnt matter how many hits these new artist produce that doesnt make them special. Like I said in another thread she has no great album, no talent, her album and tour sales are average.

So explain how and why Rihanna has lasted as long as she has? All pop stars are products or rather brands but brands can have longevity and Rihanna has shown she has it. That goes beyond what anyone thinks of her career and music.i can't believe that I am defending her in here.

I would say the ultimate example of product is Britney Spears. But her downfall had nothing to do with her lack of true music talent. In 2000, 2001 up until the spring of 2002, she was exactly where Beyonce has been for the last decade with the media. . That's why it's a joke when people say Justin Timberlake went from NSYNC to superstardom. The music video about is ex-girlfriend is what started his solo career, not his own talent. That's what got him serious attention, the video not the song. Because Britney Spears was so hated at that time, a music video 'shaming' her got him big credibility with most people. . NSYNC was nowhere by the end of the summer 2001. He didn't make it on his own. [Edited 1/26/18 14:37pm]
